About the Item

Adolf Dehn, The Artist and The Bull, is from Dehn's period of teaching in Colorado at both the Broadmoor Art Academy and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. In this humous self-portrait he's carefully balanced on a fence post. In the middle-ground there are four cowboys, also busy -- are they also drawing or perhaps reading newspapers? They are slightly more comfortable in any case. Adolf Dehn (1895-1968) was an American painter, printmaker and draftsman. A native of Waterville, Minnesota, he attended the Minneapolis School of Art where he met colleague Wanda Gag. Amazingly they were both awarded scholarships to the Art Students League in 1917. Dehn made his first lithograph, ironically titled The Harvest, in 1921, printed by George Miller. His career was off! That same year, 1921, his lithographs were featured in his first one-man show, at the Weyhe Gallery. Eventually his subjects fell into two camps: caricatures or spoofs – preferably of high society types, or elegantly composed landscapes. This particular lithograph manages to bridge that divide. While he remained a New Yorker, he was also a world traveler who was never at loss for material. Dehn was an academician of the National Academy of Design, a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and twice a recipient of Guggenheim Fellowships. He taught at both the Broadmoor Art Academy and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, and was a founding member of the gallery Associated American Artists, NYC, all in the 1930s. This self-portrait is an unusual instance of a print that did NOT result in a properly printed edition. It exists only in a few trial proofs. It is signed, titled, and annotated 'Trial Proof,' in pencil. The reference is Lumsdaine/O'Sullivan 317.
