About the Item
Albert Victor Eugene Brenet was born June 25, 1903 in Harfleur, France, near Le Havre. He died at the age of 102 on July 4, 2005 in Paris. He painted primarily in gouache. Brenet is one of the most important French sea painters. He travelled the globe for seventy years. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1921 where he was a pupil of the Impressionist painter Ernest Laurent. In 1935 he began traveling for the magazine L'Illustration and continued to work for the journal, making numerous trips and delivering many reports. In 1936, Brenet was appointed official painter to the French navy. Brenet is the only artist ever to have been granted specialities in all three services--army, navy, and air force. He was awarded the Legion d'Honneur. An important French sea painter, the artist was involved in many advertising campaigns for the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique. Among his gouaches and drawings are images of the French countryside, mountains, the Tunisian desert, Spain, Japan, and a bestiary which presents sketches of lions, tigers, and horses.

Bernard Villemot (1911 – 1989) was a French graphic artist known primarily for his iconic advertising images for Orangina, Bally Shoe, Perrier, and Air France. He was known for a sharp artistic vision that was influenced by photography, and for his ability to distill an advertising message to a memorable image with simple, elegant lines and bold colors. From 1932 to1934, he studied in Paris with artist Paul Colin, who was considered a master of Art Deco. From 1945 to 1946, Villemot prepared posters for the Red Cross. In the late 1940s, he also began a famous series of travel posters for Air France that would continue for decades. In 1949, Villemot's works were exhibited with those of his contemporary poster artist Raymond Savignac at the Gallery of Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1953, Villemot began designing logos and posters for the new soft drink Orangina, and over time these works would become some of his best known. In 1963, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris held an exhibition of his works. By the end of his life in 1989, he was known as one of the last great poster artists, and many collectors and critics consider him to be the "painter-laureate of modern commercial art." Since his death in 1989, his memorable images have been increasingly sought after by collectors. At least three books have been published that survey his art: "Les affiches de Villemot," by Jean-Francois Bazin...

The Beach in Normandy, France, Near Bayeux: A 19th C. Etching by Maxime Lalanne
By Maxime Lalanne
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a mid 19th century etching entitled "Point de Depart de Guillaume de Normandie, Beuzeval, Emboucher de la Dives Calvados (The point of departure of William of Normandy (William the Conqueror)), created by Maxime Lalanne and published in 'L'Illustration Nouvelle' in 1868 by Alfred Cadart. The etching depicts the beach at Beuzeval in Normandy; with the shore in the foreground on the right lined by a row of houses, the sea at the left, and an expansive sky above. There are people on the beach and sailboats in the water. This is the point of departure of William the Conqueror for his voyage to England in 1066, resulting in his victory over the Anglo-Saxons at the Battle of Hastings and the establishment of Norman rule. The events are memorialized in the Bayeux tapestry, created by William's wife.
This etching is presented in a white mat that is suitable for framing. This excellent impression is printed on thick chain-linked, laid cream-colored paper with wide margins. It is signed in plate in the lower right and titled in the plate in the lower left. There is a collector's stamp (either an "NC" or a "CN") in the lower right corner. The sheet measures 9.5" high by 12.75" wide and the mat measures 13.5" high by 16" wide. There are two tiny faint spots in the periphery of the upper margin, but the print is otherwise in excellent condition. This etching is held by many museums and institutions, including The British Museum, The Yale University Art Gallery, The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Columbia University Libraries and The William Morris Gallery...
