About the Publication:
Alternance (Alternation), published in 1946 by Le Gerbier, stands as a significant postwar livre d'artiste uniting sixteen original etchings with sixteen unpublished literary texts. Produced with exceptional attention to etching technique, paper selection, and typographic refinement, the album reflects the collaborative vitality of mid-century French printmaking. Printed across several fine papers including Monival, Rives BFK, and Lana a la forme, the edition embodies the craft traditions of Atelier Lacouriere-Frelaut, Atelier Quesneville, and the presses of G. Girard, preserving a moment of rich artistic exchange in the years immediately following World War II.
About the Artist:
Andre Dignimont (1891–1965) was a French painter, illustrator, draughtsman, and master observer of Parisian elegance whose refined, psychologically charged depictions of theater life, cabaret performers, fashionable women, and intimate interior scenes placed him at the heart of the artistic culture that also shaped Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassilly Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. Deeply inspired by the atmospheric subtlety of Edgar Degas, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, and the Nabis, Dignimont developed a distinctive visual language that blended classical draftsmanship with the softness, immediacy, and emotional depth of modernism, resulting in works celebrated for their lyrical contour lines, delicate tonalities, and an unmistakable ability to capture character with a single gesture. A central figure in the Montparnasse creative scene, he thrived in the literary and artistic salons of early twentieth-century Paris and became one of the most prolific contributors to the golden age of the livre d’artiste, illustrating works by major writers including Colette, Pierre Mac Orlan, Francis Carco, Paul Morand, Jean Cocteau, and Maurice Dekobra. His drawings and prints—frequently centered on women depicted with both sophistication and vulnerability—bridged fine art, fashion, editorial illustration, and theatrical culture, shaping a generation of French illustrators and influencing later figurative painters and visual storytellers who admired his ability to merge narrative elegance with acute psychological insight. Dignimont's work continues to command attention for its evocative portrayal of Parisian modernity, its seamless fusion of literary and visual culture, and its enduring relevance within the broader lineage of twentieth-century figurative art.
