I loved the way these trees were looming out of the mist on a country lane in South Devon. It had been raining for days. A reduction lino cut is a method of relief printing in which each colour layer is taken from the same block (lino), meaning that an entire edition must be printed in one go as once the lino has been carved into for the next layer, you can't go back to print more.

These trees were emerging from heavy sea mist on a country lane in South Devon, and inspired this reduction linocut. Working on snow scenes is always a challenge as there is no room for error keeping white paper unmarked. This is difficult because a lino block is almost empty, with few marks except the essential ones. In this linocut I have included a typical winter light, but the main event is the shadows changing shade and colour across the snow.
