About the Item

Diptych. This two sheet color woodcut was created by Antonio Frasconi in 1951. Edition 8. Each image size 19 7/16 x 16 7/16" (49.4 x 418 cm) plus margins. Signed and titled in pencil on each sheet. Inscribed "3/8." Good to very good condition. The two sheets are matted in a 4 ply archival mat and back with 2" mat between images. Antonio Frasconi has been recognized as one of the foremost printmakers and masters of the woodcut medium. Born in Uruguay, he came to the United States in 1943 on a scholarship from the Art Students’ League and had his first exhibition in 1948. He has written and illustrated numerous children's books, visually captured Walt Whitman's poetry in an award winning short film, and graphically interpreted many writers of our time. He is known for his compassionate renderings of common laborers and victims of political injustice and his sense of humor and wit.
