About the Item
Eleanor Jones Harvey, Chief Curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, wrote about Bob Stuth-Wade:
“Over the course of his career, Bob Stuth-Wade has examined his responses to life through landscape, still life, portraiture, and abstraction. Restlessly creative, he has explored these varied genres with equal concentration…..”
Stuth-Wade’s method of painting is uniquely his own, having taught himself technique; his only formal training was as a teenager with Dallas artist Perry Nichols. His process often entails the creation of an initial ‘energy’ study in artist-made charcoal, several works on paper, and a large detailed painting of the same subject. Each step in the process enriches his understanding of his subject.
Bob Stuth-Wade was invited to participate in the Artists’ Fellowship Programme, at The Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle, North County Mayo, Republic of Ireland, in 2006. This 4 block print, selectively inked, depicting Downpatrick Head, was created after his return to Texas from Ireland, based on plein-air sketches and watercolors of the site. This is one of eight artist proofs, each hand-inked.
Since his first solo exhibition in 1971, at age 18, Bob Stuth-Wade has been a full-time artist. In addition to nine solo exhibitions at Valley House Gallery since 1991, his work has been exhibited at The Grace Museum in Abilene, Texas, and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts in San Angelo, Texas. His work is in numerous public and private collections.

This reduction lino cut was inspired by the dramatic coast line on the southwest coast path. This is a method of relief printing in which each colour layer is taken from the same block (lino), meaning that an entire edition must be printed in one go as once the lino has been carved into for the next layer, you can't go back to print more.
