About the Item

A native of New Mexico, Carl Ashby (1914-2004) moved to New York City in 1938 following a stint with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He attended the Art Students League and Atelier 17 and studied at New York University. He taught at the Parsons Division of the New School at New York University from 1970 to 1995, and made a significant contribution to the Abstract Expressionist movement. He also studied with Hans Hofmann, George Grosz, and Morris Kantor. Although this print is certainly not from the days when Ashby studied with Hofmann (who died in 1996) the Cape Cod subject does suggest a Hofmann connection. Of course it is also informed by the experimental experience of Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17. It's hard to see in the illustrations, maybe the shot of the reverse is the most helpful, but it is extremely heavily embossed. The black ink remains clear and crisp. It is signed, titled, dated 1991, and numbered, in pencil.. The edition size is 10.
