CHARLES DUFRESNE (1876–1938) was a French painter, engraver, sculptor and decorator. He came from a family of sailors and fishermen that originated in Granville. He left school to study engraving, then went to Paris, where he enrolled at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and found a position in the workshops of Hubert Ponscarme. Later, he became an assistant to the sculptor and medalist, Alexandre Charpentier. He was more attracted to painting, however, and began making pastels at Café-chantants and circuses and guinguettes, in the manner of Toulouse-Lautrec. His first exhibition came at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1903. Following that, he and his close friend, the American-born engraver Herbert Lespinasse, went on an extended trip to Italy and stayed at the Villa Médicis. In 1908, he spent some time working in Brittany at the invitation of Jean Frélaut. In 1910, he was one of the winners of the Abd-el-Tif prize and spent two years at the Villa Abd-el-Tif in Algiers, where he turned from pastels to oil painting. After returning, he opened a studio and produced numerous Orientalist works. He was mobilized at the beginning of World War I. After being gassed, he was transferred to the Section de Camouflage, under the command of an old acquaintance, the painter André Dunoyer de Segonzac. During this time, he managed to paint some Cubist scenes of the war.

Still Life Tabletop with Fruit
By George Chemeche
Located in Surfside, FL
This is a bright, colorful oil painting of a table top with fruit. Banana, Pomegranate and glass of water. George Chemeche was born in Israel in 1934 and studied at the Avni Art School in Tel Aviv and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. this painter and printmaker's sensual and romantic yet rationally conceived screen prints featuring plants and flowers are associated with the PATTERN & DECORATION movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. His style is non-minimalist, sensuous, romantic, rational and decorative. it runs counter to the modernist taboo against a decorative quality in art. Though pattern painting's roots are in modern art, it contradicts some of its basic tenets as it attempts to assimilate aspects of Western and non-Western culture not previously accepted into the realm of high art. In Chemeche´s work, we can see how chosen motifs are repeated in order to cover a surface in a uniform way. The results often have a painterly feel, but remain systematic. The intention is to make a high-art statement within a contemporary context by referring to, and using what to many still remains within the world of non-art. Pattern painting, unlike abstractionism, has structure. It also has content as it refers to patterns in the real world. Usually, patterning intentionally acknowledges the decorative function of art, reconciling both the decorative and the meaningful. 'Still Life of Fruit', Grande Chaumiere, Hans Hofmann, NY ASL, Monhegan, PAFA
By Alex Minewski
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'A. Minewski' for Alexander Minewski (American, 1917-1979) and painted circa 1950. Born in Detroit, Alexander Minewski left home at the age of 14 to work in the circus. He subsequently worked as a sign painter and a logger. Minewski first studied at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit (1936-1939) and received scholarships that allowed him to attend the Art Students League in New York City (1939-1942). There, he studied under artists including Jean Charlot, Ernest Fiene, George Grosz and Vaclav Vytlacil. During World War II, Minewski joined the army and fought as a combat engineer. Wounded in Burma while fighting with Merrill's Marauders, he spent two years there recovering from his wounds. Following his time in Burma, Minewski studied for two years on the G.I. Bill in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere (1950-1952) and, independently, with Hans Hofmann in New York City (1952-1953). Hofmann was influential on his style and his work shifted away from a moody realism towards a fuller expressionism. In 1954, Minewski began spending his summers at the artist’s colony in Monhegan Island, Maine. While there, he was able to work and collaborate with other artists and friends such as Ted Davis...
