About the Item
Clare Halifax has hand printed an 8 colour screen print depicting the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. Printed onto Somerset Satin Paper 300gms with deckle edge. The sky pattern was created to emulate the Japanese influences that feature in the city, and overall a colour base was created that would further enforce this inspiration from Japan.
The process involved in producing a print starts with an observational pen drawing of the subject being portrayed. Once this image is finished, it is then scanned at a high resolution and taken into photoshop. Here Clare will produce the different colours featured in the print through a series of layers with the any patterns that are presented being created especially for the piece. Once all the layers are achieved the next stage is producing the screen print. Each layer of colour is exposed onto a silkscreen by using a photo sensitive emulsion, creating a stencil on the screen. Using a screen printing bed that secures the screen in place, each colour is printed by pushing ink through the screen and registering it in the appropriate place, layering each layer until the final finished outcome seen here.

Having grown up in the South West of England, the inspiration for Clare’s work comes from the buildings that surrounded her and nostalgic reminisces of places and items of interest. Within each image, design, pattern and colour plays an important part, adding depth and decoration to build an aesthetically pleasing overall effect. Clare Halifax currently resides in London where she continues to be influenced by her everyday environment.
