About the Item
Clinton Hill (1922-2003), lived in SoHo, New York, and was a frequent Gallery visitor. Born in Idaho and raised on a working ranch, he joined the US Navy during World War II and became a commander of a minesweeper in the Pacific. After the war, on the GI Bill, he attended the University of Oregon, Eugene, graduating in 1947. Moving to New York City with his partner Alan Tran, Hill attended the Brooklyn Museum School from 1949 to 1951. In 1951 Hill studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris, and the Instituto d'Arte Statale, Florence. His first of many, many one-person shows was at the Zabriskie Gallery, NYC, in 1955. His friend Mark Rothko suggested its title, Ladders and Windows. In 1956 he traveled to India on a Fulbright scholarship. Through his prints, sculpture, books, hand-made objects, and lifetime of experimentation of materials, he pushed the boundaries of Abstraction. He taught in the Art Department of Queens College, NY, for twenty years. His work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, and the Albright-Knox Museum of Art, Buffalo, NY, the Smithsonian America Art Museum, Washington, DC, and the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum, London.
Arroyo is signed, dated, and numbered at lower margin. It's titled 'Aroyo' and is from an edition of 9. Clearly it was inspired by the desert landscape of the American Southwest.

Zygmund Jankowski is known for his modernist compositions and effective use of “the white of the paper.” 'Come Fly with Me' perfectly illustrates that skill; It is signed, titled, and dated in pencil. Jankowski was born in South Bend, Indiana. After serving in the US Navy Jankowski attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, where studied with Victor DeWilde, Otis Oldfield, and George Post. Returning to the mid-west he taught at Indiana University, South Western Michigan College, Hilton Leech School of Art, the Bremen Art Center, the Niles Art Center, the South Bend Art Association, and the Rockport Art Association. Beginning in 1964 he summered in Rocky Neck, MA, and opened a summertime gallery. In the 1970s he made a permanent move to Gloucester where he held workshops at his studio. In the 1990s he moved to Lanesville. Among those institutions with work by Jankowski is the Cape Ann Museum. Nastasio was born in Milan in 1934. In 1952 he followed the “free school of the nude” led by Aldo Salvatori. In 1960 he attended the Atelier of Giorgio Upilio where Giacometti, Lam, Fontana, De Chirico worked and where he had the opportunity to study the themes of the inspiring myths. He worked at the MAF foundry with the master Tullio Figini who shared the secrets of the lost wax Renaissance fusion and where he met the masters Crocetti, Manfrini, Manzu , Minguzzi, Fabbri,. He then moved on to Quinto de Stampi at the De Andreis foundry where Marino Marini, Pomodoro, Rudy Wach, Strebelle, Negri and Rosental operated. A regular reader of the great sapienzal texts of antiquity, he trained in particular on the Bible which he illustrated with woodcuts, aquatints, etchings and linocuts, especially the Song of Songs, the book of Ecclesiastes and several pages of the Gospels He also drew his inspiration from the philosophical-religious tradition of the Eastern world through the reading of Rig-Veda, Upanisad and the Matnavi of Rumi. In 1966-67 he obtained the chair at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera and for thirty years he devoted himself to the teaching of Art Education in various schools.
