About the Item

David Feinstein's Negro District, Brooklyn, a lithograph of 1936-39, is a marvel. It's a construction of every detail the artist could think of to show the nature of the locale: The wrought iron balcony/fire escape, the church steeple and the many in the distance, the smoke stack, the elevated train tracks and the amazing varied buildings beyond. To my eye the three African-Americans are father and sons, and they too are intensely drawn. The figure at the left is particularly interesting with a questioning, almost skeptical glance at the others. This lithograph was made for the NYC-WPA and has the stamp at the lower left; It is signed and titled, in pencil. It is also titled at the bottom of the sheet in another hand. On the reverse there are three glue stains. These are an indication that once there was a WPA label affixed in that spot. Very little is known about the artist but clearly he was on the WPA in NYC during the Depression as many of his subjects have the NYC-WPA stamp.
