About the Item

Abstracted, figurative monotype of six figures in a landscape 12 x 24 inch image on 22 x 33 inch Rives BFK paper Rives BFK paper is made of cotton, has deckled edges and is acid-free Signed lower right This contemporary figurative monotype was made by Hudson, NY based artist, David Konigsberg, in 2018. The horizontal print features six abstracted figures walking along a clouded country landscape under a blue sky. Loose, gestural brushstrokes further abstract the image and provide visual texture. The monotype measures 12 x 24 inches on 22 x 33 inch acid-free, 100% cotton Rives BFK paper. The artist's signature is located in the lower right corner. About the artist: David Konigsberg is a conceptual realist who works across media and painting genres to portray transitional spaces, metaphoric moments and alternative histories. A long-time member of the Gowanus and Red Hook artist communities in Brooklyn, he is now based in Hudson and employs the area's landscapes as the setting and sometimes subject of his work. Artist Statement: In many ways, this is a more intimate and personal group of paintings than in years past in that it draws from heavily from personal experience and my everyday surroundings, and rather than take this to another level of imaginary landscape and history, I stay in the moment and let the forces within that resonate with the viewer. In particular, the landscapes in this show draw from my long walks nearby and climbs in the Catskills. I find these walks and adventures among ancient mountains spiritual and deeply rewarding. At the same time, I have this habit of juxtaposing minuteness and immensity, and introduce, as well, the experience of my garden, a highly structured urban oasis whose most rebellious and delightful aspects are accidental poppies between the beds of unruly zinnias. In this group, I focus on what the garden produces in a collection of still lives and figures. These days, I find myself less inclined to make art that is supposed to be “about something” and am comfortable with letting metaphor reveal itself in quiet and unexpected ways. In fact, I’d say that many of these paintings took be by surprise. Although executed squarely within the traditions of landscape and still life, they have a life of their own. And to me, at least, they seem to come from somewhere beyond my control. David Konigsberg is an accomplished artist, exhibiting on a national scale. His work has been represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery based in Hudson, NY for over 15 years.

Opening Farm (Encaustic Monochromatic Pastoral Landscape in Earth Tones & White)
By Leigh Palmer
Located in Hudson, NY
Encaustic on board 10 x 12 inches This monochromatic encaustic landscape on board was created by Hudson Valley-based artist Leigh Palmer. Once a hard edge realist painter, the artist eschews those details, letting the stroke of his brush and moody palette leave an abstract implication of the landscape. The main image is bordered by white to give the impression of a window. About the artist: In the Openings series, Palmer integrates the frame into the painting. This element contributes to the narrative, suggesting the viewer is inside looking out. We are not a part of the landscape, rather we are a peaceful witnesses to nature that will transcend even our own existence and continue to change with the seasons long after we have passed. We are romanced by Leigh Palmer's unique ability to pare down and find the true essence of the landscape, gently veiled through his own soul. We are proud to have exhibited his work since the inception of Carrie Haddad Gallery in 1991. Today, the artist continues to work with both encaustic and oil paint. He is currently developing a new series in his studio right across the street from the gallery. We hope to reveal his new work to the public sometime in 2021. Artist Statement: My paintings are based on observation of the landscape in the Hudson River Valley where I live, and are improvised in the studio; the images are found or discovered in my memory of familiar places and developed during the painting process. Human beings do not appear, but their presence is felt in the marks left on the ground (furrows, fence rows, roads), and sometimes in the air (smoke, haze). About the artist: In 1987, Leigh Palmer moved with his family from suburban Duxbury, Massachusetts, to Tivoli, New York, a quiet town on the Hudson River, north of New York City. His subject matter shifted to the sprawling hills and countryside of the Hudson Valley. “I wanted to respond to the new landscape I was seeing, to catch something of the feeling I had just before dark,” says Palmer. “I took a lot of photographs, but I was happier with the paintings I created from memory.” Leigh Palmer has been represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY for over 25 years.
