Dong Kingman was born Dong Moy Shu in Oakland, California, the son of Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong. At age five and a half, he traveled with his family back to Hong Kong. Kingman returned to the United States in his late teens. In 1929, he attended the Fox Morgan Art School. In the late 1930s, Kingman served as an artist in the Works Progress Administration, painting over 300 works. In the 1950s and 1960s, Kingman worked as an illustrator in the film industry, designing the backgrounds for several major motion pictures. In 1981, Kingman made history as the first American artist to be featured in a solo exhibition following the resumption of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and China when the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China hosted a critically acclaimed exhibition that drew over 100,000 people.
American Airlines began in the 1920s with cooperation between several small airlines across the US under the "American Airways" brand. It was launched in 1935 when US businessman E.L. Cord acquired and renamed American Airlines.
In 1945, American Airlines established "American Overseas Airlines" and began offering transatlantic flights. In the 1950s, American Airlines preferred aircraft manufacturer Douglas, which created the Douglas DC-7.
In the 1960s and the jet age, new technological advancements made jet aircraft a reality. American Airlines started flying the Boeing 707.
2013 American Airlines and US Airways merged, creating the world's largest airline by fleet size.

Dong Kingman
Born in Oakland, CA on March 31, 1911. When Kingman was five, his family moved to Hong Kong where he grew up and attended Lingnan Grammar School. The headmaster of the school, Szetu Wei, had studied painting in Paris and recognized his budding artistic talent. For several years he trained young Kingman in both oriental and occidental approaches to painting. Returning to San Francisco in 1929, Kingman became active in the local art scene and began painting scenes of the city. His first solo show at the San Francisco Art Center in 1936 brought immediate recognition. During the 1930s he spent five years working on commissions for the Federal Public Works of Art Project. During WWII he created maps and charts for the O.S.S. After the war Kingman settled in NYC and taught at Columbia University. His paintings were used as backdrops for the movie "Flower Drum Song" and his watercolors were reproduced in Life and on the covers of Fortune and Holiday magazines. Kingman died in NYC on May 12, 2000. Member: American WC Society; NA (1951). Exh: SFMA Inaugural, 1935; Vallejo Public Library, 1935; Calif.
