About the Item
"Cuenca - The Cliff Dwellers" Antique Etching of the Casas Colgadas
Detailed architectural etching by Ernest David Roth (American b. 1879 d. 1964.) The etching depicts the famous Casas Colgadas, or hanging houses, found over the gorge in Cuenca, Spain. Roth utilizes the fine lines of the etching to create a realistic and highly detailed picture without sacrificing a sense of movement within the line work. Dense areas of cross-hatching create shadows on the buildings and fine, looser lines are used to depict the rolling hills and clouds in the distance.
Printed with Platetone. 9.88"H x 8.88"W (plate), 14.013"H x 11.25"W (sheet).
Also known as "surface tone," platetone is a technique used in intaglio printmaking.
Process: After wiping the majority of the ink from the surface of an engraved or etched printing plate, a thin film of ink is deliberately left behind.
Effect: This remaining ink produces a light, continuous color tone in the final print, in contrast to the sharp, linear marks from the engraved lines. The artist can selectively wipe areas to create highlights and varied tones.
Significance: Because the inking and wiping process is done by hand before each impression, every print can be unique. The technique is often associated with the work of Dutch painter Rembrandt, who was known for creating "painted" impressions of his prints with moody, atmospheric effects.
Ernest David Roth was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1879 and his family moved to the United States when he was a young child. While working a day job, Roth began taking night classes at the National Academy of Design in New York, where he studied etching with James D. Smillie. Roth exhibited some in New York and Philadelphia but struggled to find success in the United States. As a result, he moved to Europe and began creating etchings of prominent places there. He first gained recognition in Europe when the director the Uffizi Gallery in Florence purchased his etchings of the city for the Uffizi's print department. Roth then returned to the United States where he enjoyed more success, winning awards from the Chicago Society of Etchers and the Salmagundi Club. He exhibited extensively across the U.S. at locations such as the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Academy of Design. He died in 1964 in Cambridge, New York.

Ernest David Roth
Ernest David Roth was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1879 and, at the age of five, immigrated with his parents to the United States. He studied painting at the National Academy of Design under George Maynard and Edgar Ward and the New York School of Art under F. Luis Mora. Roth was a regular contributor to shows at the National Academy and the Pennsylvania Academy. In his painting and etching, Roth concentrated on simple architectural views, rarely including people in his scenes. He has received awards from the Salmagundi Club in 1911, 1912, 1915, 1917 and 1918, from the Chicago Society of Etchers in 1914 and 1936, from the Society of American Etchers in 1935 and from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1930. He received a silver medal for etching and a bronze medal for painting at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915. Roth was a master printer as well as etcher, and he printed etchings for other artists, notably John Sloan. He also printed William Blake's large etching of The Pilgrimage to Canterbury. He lived and worked in Manhattan, and subsequently moved to West Redding, Connecticut.

John Taylor Arms was born in Washington, DC in 1887. He studied law at Princeton University, transferring to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, to study architecture, graduating in 1912. After serving as an officer in the United States Navy during World War I, he devoted himself full-time to etching. He published his first original etchings in 1919.
His initial subject was the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City near which he worked. Arms developed a successful career as a graphic artist in the 1920s and 1930s, specializing in series of etchings of Gothic churches and cathedrals in France and Italy. In addition to medieval subjects, Arms made a series of prints of American cities.
He used sewing needles and magnifying glasses to get a fine level of detail. A member of many printmaking societies, Arms served as president of the Society of American Graphic Artists. An educator, Arms wrote the Handbook of Print Making and Print Makers (1934) and did numerous demonstrations and lectures. Arms was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member in 1930, and became a full member in 1933. His work was also part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics...
