Federica Galli
Venice canal view with classical renaissance architecture by italian etcher

1984

About the Item

ref. 549 A prominent figure of the art of engraving in Italy, Federica Galli was born in 1932 in Soresina – a village just outside Cremona. Straight after the war, in 1946, she convinced her parents to enroll her at the Artistic Lyceum in Milan and in 1950 she went on to attend the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, from where she graduated four years later with a diploma in painting. She began engraving in 1954 - “Il paese dell’Alberta”- experimenting with etching, a technique she never abandoned for the rest of her life. In 1966 she married the journalist, Giovanni Raimondi – editor-in-chief of the Corriere della Sera – and began to embark on a densely packed program of cultural trips that took her to the most important European capitals, and to countries where the art of engraving is less deeply rooted. This was also the year in which she matured the conviction that engraving was the technique in which she expressed herself most effectively and started to apply herself exclusively to this art form, producing over eight hundred different subjects. Starting from her early personal exhibitions – the first one took place in 1960 in Milan – she met with the favor of the public and critics alike. In the space of a few years, she could count on the support of some of the most authoritative critics of her time: Franco Russoli, Mario de Micheli, Giovanni Testori – who was to follow her closely until he died - Mina Gregori, Gian Alberto dell’Acqua, Roberto Tassi, Renzo Zorzi, Carlo Bo, Daniel Berger (Metropolitan Museum of New York), Gina Lagorio, Giuseppe and Francesco Frangi, Marco Fragonara, Giorgio Soavi and David Landau (Oxford University). Ten years after her death, in 2021, the city of Milan tributes her with a large institutional retrospective, the Green Grand Tour exhibition. And naming her a new city street. With the purchase of the etching, we will provide a rich bilingual (Italian-English) catalogue of the retrospective exhibition held in Milan, 2021. With texts by the eight curators, fully illustrated.

She achieved this fame because she was able to interpret views, as Milan and Venice, landscapes and architecture with a poetic and original eye. Moreover she had the foresight to portray the beauty of the great Italian trees with a cycle of sixty different platemarks. In 2021, Milan named a new street after her. Her etchings are in prestigious museums in Europe and America, as well as in many private collections. Her work is protected by a foundation with her name, based in Milan. The etching was exhibited last year in the critical retrospective that the city of Milan promoted and set up to mark the tenth anniversary of her death. Milan's municipality has named a new street to her for the occasion. The many international and accredited critics who have lingered to appreciate Galli's etchings remark on her ability to combine poetry, architectural precision and interpretative originality. Federica Galli has always been able to take a fresh look at all the landscapes and architecture on which she has cast her gaze. NMWA (National Museum of Women in Arts) in Washington conserved the complete Venezia portfolio. Also, her oeuvres are in significant Italian museum collections such as the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, (the same museum where Leonardo's Codex is conserved) and Museo of Castello Sforzesco, both in Milan; di Milano, Ala Ponzone in Cremona. It is hand signed in pencil at the lower right. The plate mark (image) size is 17 x 22.25 inches, paper size is 20 x 25 inches, matted size is 24 x 29 inches, framed size is 26.5 x 31.5 inches. It is custom matted with a brown inner mat, gold liner and cream-colored outer mat. The wood frame is black with a faint gold inner edge. The print is in fair-to-good condition. It is attached to the mat with archival tape. It bears the residue of a previous backing on the reverse, but that does not at all show on the front of the print. The surface of the print is in very good condition with strong colors. There are small losses to the corners of the print, far from the image. The mat is in good condition. The frame is in fair condition with some pits, mostly on the lower and upper bars. I have included pictures of the reverse of the print as well as the flaws on the frame. I can ship the print with the frame or without the frame. Luigi Kasimir was born in 1881 at Pettau, today Ptuj, Slovenia, then a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. He inherited his talent from his ancestors; his grandfather was a painter and a poet, and his father an officer in the Habsburg army, who later became a professional painter. Kasimir attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under Wilhelm Unger, who introduced him to the technique of the coloured etching, and also to his future wife, the artist Tanna Hoernes.[1] He died in 1962 in Grinzing, a suburb of Vienna.Kasimir was among the first to develop the technique of the coloured etching. Before this, prints were usually hand-coloured with the colour being applied in a casual, haphazard manner. Kasimir would first create a sketch usually in pastel, he then transferred the design on as many as four to six plates, printing one after the other and applying the colour on the plate, all done by hand. Kasimir is mainly famous for his etchings, but he also produced some oil painting, as well as some pastels. One of his favourite genres was the landscape, or veduta. He demonstrated a predisposition street scenes, and tourist landmarks. He depicted places from all over Europe, mainly Italy, Austria, and Germany. He also travelled to the United States to do a series of etchings of famous sights ranging from urban landmarks such as New York City skyscrapers, to natural wonders like Yosemite Valley. Luigi Kasimir’s etchings...
