End To End Gallery
Measurements: approximately 26.57 × 22.6 in (≈ 67.5 × 57.4 cm)
This is a signed and numbered example, part of Vaucher’s later print output, from a run curated by street-art / socially conscious galleries. The condition is presumed excellent; no major faults listed in the original listing.
Artist Biography & Significance
Born in 1945 in Dagenham, Essex, England, Gee Vaucher (née Carole Vaucher) is a seminal figure at the crossroads of punk aesthetics, political activism, and avant-garde collage practice.
Vaucher is perhaps best known for her longtime visual partnership with the anarcho-punk collective Crass, for which she designed album sleeves, posters, and magazines under a radical DIY ethos.
Her work extends beyond punk graphics into painting, photomontage, installation, performance, and publishing, always rooted in her anarchist, pacifist, and feminist convictions.
Vaucher and Penny Rimbaud (her long-time collaborator) founded Dial House in Essex in 1967 as a self-sustaining open artistic commune.
White Columns. That space catalyzed crossovers among experimental music, visual art, alternative publishing, and activism.
In recent years, Vaucher’s work has gained increasing institutional recognition: the 2017 Introspective retrospective, exhibitions in new venues, and her inclusion in survey shows exploring feminist resistance and protest art.
Her visual methodology leans heavily on juxtaposition and subversion—often combining found imagery, photorealistic fragments, surreal elements, and stark symbolic figures.
Vaucher herself has remarked that she often removes herself from the work in order to let the images “speak.”
As creative critic Peter Kennard wrote,
“The anger that fuels the work has become more ‘inward’ as time progresses … Her art tears through the lies that are now the official discourse of public life.”
Thus Flying High emerges not as a decorative print but as a reflection of a lifelong artistic commitment to dissent, interiority, and visual irony.
“Flying High” is part of Vaucher’s mature output in the realm of high-quality limited prints, merging her political sensibility with a more polished print medium. The title suggests transcendence or escape—perhaps echoing the tension between aerial distance and grounded rebellion, an interplay seen in Vaucher’s broader practice.
Formal influences in her work include Surrealism (through displacement, uncanny assemblage) and Dada / collage traditions, transformed through her insistence on political content.
Her early training at the South-East Essex School of Art (attending from her mid-teens) gave her the core technical foundation before she veered into experimental modes.
Throughout her evolution, Vaucher has resisted strict categorization—as she often says, she is “whateverist,” doing “whatever it takes” to express her ideas.
Her art shares a lineage with other politically engaged visual workers (e.g. Jamie Reid, John Heartfield) but remains distinct in its personal lyricism and introspective registers.
Collectors of protest art, punk ephemera, and 20th/21st century countercultural visual work will find this print appealing—not merely for its visual balance but for its provenance within an underrecognized but increasingly canonical body of work.
