About the Item

Helen Greene Blumenschein was born in Brooklyn into a parents who were already professional artists. The family moved to Taos when Blumenschein was ten and they became part of the artists' community. A Parisian sojourn in 1929-31 made it possible for Blumenschein to study with the French cubist Andre Lhote. Back in this country she attended the Art Students League in New York City from 1932 to 1936. It it is in this period that she produced 'Snow Storm.' It's such an endearing work it's not at al hard to understand that she returned to the Southwest. During World War II she served in the South Pacific with the Women's Army Corp. She went on to make paintings, prints, and drawings, most often of the Southwest landscape. She was also an archaeologist, historian and naturalist. This lithograph is signed and titled in pencil. It is in basically good shape but there's a small oil stain over the 'B' in her name.
