About

Original handmade Japanese woodblock print. Waiting for the Tide (Shio-machi). We see two boats in full sail passing by a collection of moored sailboats that await the rising tide. In the distance we see various mountain peaks of various shades and a sky that is light blue above and soft purple at the horizon. Signed by the artist in pencil and in brush. Sealed "jizuri" (self-printed). This design was chosen as the cover for the artist's catalogue raisonné by Abe. Hiroshi Yoshida began his career as a painter, and first traveled to America in 1899, when he sold paintings to clients that included Charles Lang Freer, to whom he sold a painting of a cherry tree that is now at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Yoshida became a printmaker in the 1920s as a way for the rising middle class to be able to purchase fine artworks that he created as multiples via the ancient woodblock printing tradition of Japan. Yoshida also curated the famous 1930 Toledo Museum circuit exhibition of 370 shin hanga prints that included many of his own works. He is considered one of the greatest printmaking Japanese landscape artists of the 20th century.
