About the Item

Pink Flowers - Limited Edition Naive Serigraph Colorful serigraph by Croatian naive artist Ivan Rabuzin (b. 27 March 1921, d. 18 December 2008.) Three giant pink flowers stand in a highly patterned landscape composed of tiny trees, grass, and other flowers. The small trees create three distinct hills along the bottom of the piece, mirroring the three large flowers. The sky is rendered in beautiful cyan color and is crossed in two places by pale yellow clouds. The yellow of the clouds is also mirrored in the highlights of the trees and grasses. Overall, these reoccurring colors and numbers create a strong sense of pattern and movement within the piece. Hand numbered and signed by artist along the bottom "60/200 Ivan Rabuzin" Frame size: 31.38" H x 26.75" W Paper size: 30" H x 22" W Image size: 22.5" H x 18.75" W Ivan Rabuzin was born in the small village of Kljuc, near Novi Marof, Croatia in 1921. He was the sixth of eleven children and his father worked as a miner. As an adult, Rabuzin moved to Zagreb where he studied carpentry, then returned to Novi Marof, eventually becoming the foreman at the furniture factory located in the town. He did not begin painting until he was thirty-five years old. His paintings were derived from his childhood landscape and local countryside. He won first prize at the Exhibition of Amateur Painters in Zagreb in 1958 and in 1960, only four years after he began painting, he had his first solo exhibition. Following this he began painting full-time and in 1963 his work was exhibited at the Galerie Mona Lisa in Paris, marking the beginning of his international career. He became known for his geometric and densely patterned works depicting landscapes, vegetation, and clouds. In 1972 he was described as “one of the greatest naïve painters of all times and countries” by the French art critic Anatole Jokovsky. Rabuzin continued to paint until an illness began preventing him in 2002. He passed away on December 18, 2008, in Varaždin, Croatia.
