James Basire after JMW Turner View of the Cathedral of Christ Church and part of Corpus Christi College, Oxford Engraving 37x47cm From the Oxford Almanac, 1811. The Oxford Alamanac was an annual almanac published by the Oxford University Press for the University of Oxford from 1674 until 2019. These typically included fine engravings - by artists like Basire, as well as Michael Burghers, JMW Turner and John Piper, as well as information about the university. James Basire was a prolific English engraver, specialising in architectural prints. A member of the Society of Antiquaries, he was the son of a cartographer, Isaac Basire. His son and his grandson were both named James and indeed both successful engravers, leading to some difficulties in attributing their works.
