Ernest Edwin Abbott was born in 1889 and grew up in Bideford United Kingdom, With his younger siblings Violet, Reginald, Olive and his parents Charles and Sarah Abbott, His Farther worked as a upholsterer.
Abbott decided in 1911 to migrate to Western Australia on the ship Tainui, Settled in Western Australia he then married his wife Florence Radcliffe Olde in 1913 whom also came to Australia in 1912 from Bideford. They had two sons, Reginald Douglas Abbott and Kenneth John Abbott. They moved to South Australia where he taught art at Stott’s for four years. Later in 1920 the family moved to the suburb of Kew in Melbourne Victoria, where he took a studio in Oxford Chambers at 475 Bourke Street. He also built a studio later at his home in Black Rock. In about 1920 or 1930 he took up dry-point etching, and gave up his city studio to concentrate on printmaking at his home. Abbott made his own engraving tools...

Loggan was born to English and Scottish parents, and was baptised in Danzig in 1634. After studying engraving in Danzig with Willem Hondius (1598-1652 or 1658), he moved to London in the late 1650s, going on to produce the engraved title-page for the folio 1662 Book of Common Prayer. He married in 1663 and moved to Nuffield in Oxfordshire in 1665. Loggan was appointed Public Sculptor to the nearby University of Oxford in the late 1660s, having been commissioned to produce bird’s-eye views of all the Oxford colleges. He lived in Holywell Street as he did this. The 'Oxonia Illustrata' was published in 1675, with the help of Robert White (1645-1704). Following its completion, Loggan began work on his equivalent work for Cambridge; the 'Cantabrigia Illustrata' was finally published in 1690, when he was made engraver to Cambridge University.

An eighteenth-century view of one of Oxford's dreamiest spaces: the Botanic Garden, engraved by David Loggan, the noted engraver, draughtsman, and painter. The University of Oxford Botanic Garden was founded in 1621 and is the oldest botanical garden in Great Britain. Loggan's engraving focuses on its architectural qualities, with four features of the garden highlighted for their beauty, symmetry, and prowess of design.
Of particular interest in this etching are the six trompe l'oeil pieces: four gently curling pieces of paper which frame the gates of the garden, and two heraldic banners borne by cherubs and sporting legends about the garden's foundation. This is a unique print from the second state, signed and titled in pencil. the final edition of 180 was completed for the Société des peintres-graveurs français. This is a great example of the texture and tone that can be achieved with drypoint.
In keeping with the best Italian traditions, Houtin's gardens are well furnished with fragmentary architecture conveying a mood of elegiac decay, while the vestiges of grand designs, manifest in a profusion of topiary-lined avenues, evoke French precedents. Elsewhere, temples and pavilions scattered over undulating slopes speak of an enthusiasm for English garden practice.
Bordering at times on the surreal, baroque in their richness and extravagance of conception, Houtin's gardens are hybrid creations in terms of both their botany and architecture, which wittily plunder a wide spectrum of conventions.
François Houtin was born in Craon en Mayenne, France in 1950. He has lived and worked in Paris since 1971. He was trained as a landscape architect, and worked on such prominent projects as the renovation of the Jardin des Tuilleries in 1991. It wasn't until 1973 that he learned printmaking from Jean Delpech, and by 1979 he had become a full-time artist known for his highly detailed prints...

A beautifully coloured map of Cambridgeshire, with an antique description of the county to the reverse. The map, along with many others, was published in Speed's atlas, 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine', first published in 1611. This particular miniature edition of the 'Theatre' was published in miniature by George Humble in 1627, entitled 'England Wales Scotland and Ireland Described and Abridged With ye Historic Relation of things worthy memory from a farr larger Voulume. Done by John Speed.’ Speed's original map was likely engraved for this edition by Peter van den Keere. van den Keere's maps soon came to be known as "Miniature Speeds".
John Speed was an English cartographer, chronologer and historian. The son of a citizen and Merchant Taylor in London, he rose from his family occupation to accept the task of drawing together and revising the histories, topographies and maps of the Kingdoms of Great Britain as an exposition of the union of their monarchies in the person of King James I and VI. He accomplished this with remarkable success, with the support and assistance of the leading antiquarian scholars of his generation. He drew upon and improved the shire maps of Christopher Saxton, John Norden and others, being the first to incorporate the hundred-boundaries into them, and he was the surveyor and originator of many of the town or city plans inset within them. His work helped to define early modern concepts of British national identity. His Biblical genealogies were also formally associated with the first edition of the King James Bible...

Howard Cook began his career with a $500 scholarship that sent him from his native Springfield, Massachusetts to New York City and the Art Students League. After two years at the League, Cook was impatient to see the world. He made his first trip to Europe in 1922, sketching and writing travel articles for a few publications back home. That winter he returned to the Art Students League to study etching under Joseph Pennell.
It was at this time that Cook began his investigation of printmaking, concentrating on the etching medium primarily but exploring the woodcut as well. The Fine Art Societys relationship with Whistler began with the new etchings of the Thames he made in 1879, following a visit from Ernest Brown who had joined the staff of the gallery. The plate is on a large scale and shows the change in the artists approach to the Thames since the etchings he had made in Wapping and the docks in the summer of 1859. Charing Cross is located at the junction of the Strand, Whitehall, and Cockspur Street in Central London, England. The name originates from the Eleanor cross installed by King Edward I as a memorial to his wife, Eleanor of Castile at the former hamlet of Charing. Since 1675, the cross site has been occupied by a statue of King Charles I mounted on a horse. The pedestal is thought to be designed by Wren and carved by Grinling Gibbons.
