About the Item

"The Battle of the Golden Spurs" Avante Garde Print This print of the massive Bataille des Éperons d’Or, or Battle of the Golden Spurs, is considered one of Jame's Ensor's (Belgian b. 1860 d. 1949) most important massive scene prints. The print depicts the 1302 battle of the Franco-Flemish War for which it is named, wherein the revolting Flemish forces took an unexpected victory over the French. The Flemish with their pike-wielding infantry are shown in the foreground while the battleground is strewn with fallen French cavalry soldiers. This print is a prime example of Ensor's bizarre, and sometimes grotesque, handling of his subject matter. Many of the figures feel distorted and the print does not shy away from blatant and almost comical violence as body parts lay strewn across the field, people are run through with pikes and struck in the face with maces. The majority of the piece is rendered with plain linework and little or no cross-hatching and shading, giving the piece a modern air and pointing to Ensor's position as a major forerunner to 20th century expressionism and avante-garde. Frame size: 15.5" H x 17.75" W Mat size: 14.63" H x 16.63" W Paper size: 9.75" H x 12.63" W Signed "Ensor" on plate, likely from the 1925 Delteil Catalog print edition given the age and weave of the paper. Provenance: Contains gallery tags from previous exhibitions at the Aronson Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia; the Washington D.C. National Armory in 1979; and the Crossroads Gallery in Fullerton, California. James Ensor was born in Ostend, Belgium in 1860. His parents ran a souvenir shop where he spent much of his childhood and was inspired by items such as the carnival masks his parents sold. Ensor had little interest in academia and decided to begin training with local painters when he was fifteen instead of receiving traditional schooling. He attended the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels from 1877 to 1880. Following school, he kept a studio in the attic of his parent’s house and seldom traveled, and although he exhibited his art it was often met with criticism or denounced as scandalous. He began to garner more acceptance towards the end of the 19th century and the purchase of his 1880 piece “The Lamp Boy” by the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Brussels in 1895 marked a turning point in his career. Shortly after this he had his first solo exhibition in Brussels and continued to exhibit prominently throughout the early 1900s, although he preferred to focus on music in the latter half of his life. He remained in Ostend throughout World War II and died there following an illness in 1949. Ensor’s paintings are known for their bizarre subject matter and vivid colors, including skeletons, puppets, and odd masks, as well as religious themes and political commentary. Pieces such as “Christ’s Entry Into Brussels in 1889,” which was not displayed until 1929 due to its controversial nature, are now considered important pre-cursors to the expressionist movement. Ensor’s art is held in major collections across the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp.
