About the Item

Artist Name: Jean-François Larrieu Title: Metamorphic Cityscape Year: 1998 Medium Type: Lithograph on Arches Archival Paper Size-Width Size-Height: 28.75'' x 29.5'' Signed Edition Size: Signed in pencil and marked 97/299 This artwork depicts a vibrant and densely packed cityscape filled with an array of colorful and intricate buildings. The structures vary in height, form, and design, featuring a mix of geometric shapes and patterns. The use of bold hues—yellows, reds, blues, and greens—creates a lively and dynamic visual experience. The buildings are adorned with a multitude of designs, including checkerboards, stripes, and dots, contributing to the piece's intricate texture. The background features a warm, golden hue, and a green area, likely representing a body of water or park, occupies the lower part of the artwork, dotted with small, scattered shapes. The composition is rich in detail, bustling with an energy that is both playful and captivating. Through his pictorial expression, Jean-François Larrieu is the direct descendant of the painters Paul Klee and Joan Miro, whose “visual vocabulary is delectable in order to go beyond the real world and to attain the visual metamorphosis of a universe wherein mankind remains the chief subject of a poetical on-reality”. Jean-François Larrieu superimposes forms, informed by a joyful multicolored architecture expressed through a vocabulary of multicultural, universal and personal signs and symbols. Through this pictorial language, his landscapes peopled with magical huts, figures and birds, he opens up a pathway towards known and unknown marvels, in which the imaginary is king. Besides being an accomplished painter, Jean-François Larrieu is President of the prestigious Salon d’Automne, a Salon that was in the past presided over by such important artists as Rodin, Renoir, Maillol, Hugues, Desvallières, Brayer.

By Jimmy Ernst

Jimmy Ernst  Plate II - 1970 Print - Screen Print on Heavy Paper 28'' x 37'' inches Edition: Signed in pencil and numbered 24/125 Jimmy Ernst’s artwork was influenced by a number of powerful talents and vital currents in the art of his time. Son of Max Ernst, Jimmy drew upon the biomorphic and surreal compositions of his father, as well as Arp, Klee, André Breton, and Lyonel Feininger. His mature oil paintings, which emerged in the 1950s and 1960s, reflect the Atomic Age aesthetic of the period. Often, they resemble crystals or webs; many look like vast labyrinths and are interpreted as symbols of the unconscious mind. Ernst was always interested in spirituality and drew inspiration from indigenous American art...
