About the Publication: Alternance (Alternation), published in 1946 by Le Gerbier, stands as a significant postwar livre d'artiste uniting sixteen original etchings with sixteen unpublished literary texts. Produced with exceptional attention to etching technique, paper selection, and typographic refinement, the album reflects the collaborative vitality of mid-century French printmaking. Printed across several fine papers including Monival, Rives BFK, and Lana a la forme, the edition embodies the craft traditions of Atelier Lacouriere-Frelau t, Atelier Quesneville, and the presses of G. Girard, preserving a moment of rich artistic exchange in the years immediately following World War II. About the Artist: Jean-Gabriel Daragnes (1886–1950) was a French painter, engraver, illustrator, and master printer whose refined command of color, line, and atmospheric nuance positioned him as one of the leading figures in the golden age of the livre d'artiste, working within the same transformative cultural landscape shaped by Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassilly Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. Celebrated for his emotionally charged etchings, richly inked burins, velvety aquatints, and painterly monotypes, Daragnes blended Impressionist sensitivity, Symbolist mystery, and classical engraving discipline into images that feel intimate, atmospheric, and theatrically staged. Influenced by Edgar Degas, Odilon Redon, Pierre Bonnard, and Edouard Vuillard, he became known for orchestrating light and shadow with cinematic nuance while producing some of the most lyrical illustrated books of the early twentieth century, collaborating with literary greats such as Paul Valery, Andre Gide, Jules Supervielle, Anatole France, and Charles Baudelaire. As founder of the Villa d'Artois printing studio, he mentored younger printmakers and shaped the evolution of modern engraving through his technical mastery and guidance. His work continues to inspire contemporary printmakers, illustrators, and book artists who emulate his tonal subtlety, psychological depth, and visual storytelling.
