About the Item

Medium: linocut Year: 2023 Image Size: 24 x 18 inches Edition Size: 10 An hommage to all those immigrants who die on the journey as they seek asylum in new countries. As a cultural activist/artist/printmaker, Juan Fuentes has dedicated his career to being part of a global movement for social change. His works address issues relating to local communities of color, social justice, and international struggles for liberation. The turbulent times of the 70’s set the tone for Fuentes' approach to creating social art. The Chicano, African American, Middle Eastern, Asian and Native American struggles for equality, peace and justice helped shape the themes that recur in his art. His development and introduction to silkscreen printing by mentors such as Rupert Garcia and Malaquias Montoya guided his subsequent community and political poster involvement. Fuentes' relief printing process follows closely the social realist tradition of Latin American artists such as Jose Guadalupe Posada and Leopoldo Mendez. His personal focus has been on using the figure or portrait as a means to tell a story, elaborating on the human condition.

El Sueno Despierta
By Juan Fuentes
Located in Palm Springs, CA
Signed, numbered and titled in pencil, from the edition of 30. Sueño Despierta (“Awake Dream”) is a visual meditation on identity, resilience, and cultural memory. Blending symbolic imagery with portraiture, the piece features a central figure whose eyes are open in a state of alert dreaming. Surrounding elements such as plants, spiritual motifs, and historical references evoke a deep connection to ancestral roots and collective struggle. Fuentes' intricate line work and layered textures create a dreamlike yet grounded atmosphere, emphasizing awakening not as an escape, but as a call to consciousness. The turbulent times of the 70’s set the tone for Fuentes' approach to creating social art...

On the border of this print surrounding the image the following is written: An American tourist is approached by a Mexican kid holding a small human skull in his hand. Detention at the Border of Language
By Enrique Chagoya
Located in Lyons, CO
Color lithograph, Edition 30. The artist describes this project: “In this work I defang the stereotypes of Native Americans depicted as primitive savages in the painting by Wimar. The mask and the Mayan head team up with a third character to form a fictitious, original, trans-continental Border Patrol. This work is a humorous reminder that all nations in the Americas were created by undocumented immigrants from Europe. Today, some politicians call refugees from Central America and other countries “illegal aliens” but for me they are no different from the Pilgrims or Daniel Boone...
