About the Item
Although the title 'Lobster Fleet' calls to mind numerous vessels at sea in a single spot (and there's a group in the distance), in fact the print features a lone fisherman in a small row boat. Wearing protective gear, he is rowing to the pots; the etching dates from 1937, during the Depression, and the very act of labor is a huge subject.
The print is signed and annotated 'imp' indicating that Eby printed this impression. It is also titled and priced $72 in the lower right margin. The reference is Giardina 193. She identifies the local as the coast of Maine.
Under 'style' for this listing we've used 'Ashcan' based on the year and the subject. But it is also in the tradition of the Etching Revival -- the clear, calm light, with very delicate plate tone, is a strong aspect of the scene. Giardina describes the technique as 'etching and sand-paper ground.'
