About the Item
A busy 18th century river scene along Amsterdam's waterfront.
One etching from the series of 10 lively nautical scenes entitled Seascapes. This image depicts six vessels, from left to right: a flute, a kaag, a spritsail, a rowboat, a ship of the line, and a wijd-or smalschip.
Amsterdam: 1701. Etching on lightweight laid paper with a "BB" watermark, 6 13/16 x 9 1/8 inches (173 x 231 mm), wide margins. In very good condition with some minor uniform toning. The sheet is adhered to a mat in several spots around the sheet edge on the verso with what appears to be translucent archival mending tape. Most of the tape remnants are outside of the platemark.

He returned to Sydney and settled into a Bohemian community outside Sydney. Two of his drawings were published in the radical Sydney newspaper, The Bulletin. He studied with Julian Ashton at the Art Society's School in Sydney. Ashton, an English-born Australian artist and teacher, known for his support of the Heidelberg School and for his influential art school in Sydney.
