1823

$2,900

About

Original etching entitled "Veduta degl' Avanzi della Casa Aurea di Nerone, sul Monte Palatino" (Ruins of the Golden House of Nero, on Monte Palatino) by Luigi Rossini. The Golden House of Nero was a vast palace built by the Emperor Nero in the heart of ancient Rome after the great fire in 64 AD had destroyed a large part of the city and the palaces on the Palatine Hill. It was embarrassment to Nero's successors as a symbol of decadence and it was stripped of its marble, jewels, and ivory within a decade, and within 40 years, the palace was obliterated until re-discovered at the end of the 15th Century and became for its Frescoes. Matted in a 2 1/4 inch ivory colored conservation mat. Image size: 15 1/2 x 21 2/1 inches. Rossini is best known for his etchings of ancient Roman architecture. Rossini was born in Ravenna, and studied at the Academy of Bologna and graduated in 1813 as an architect and artist. In contrast to Piranesi, Rossini made greater use of the bucolic settings in his etchings of Roman ruins. His images of the architectural masterpieces of ancient Rome, including the Pantheon, the Coliseum, the Appian Way, the Temple of Peace, and the Golden House of Nero, have greatly influenced architects, artists, writers, and other connoisseurs of Roman culture up to the present day.
