Rae was born in Cambridge and trained at the Slade 1888-1890. Her early painting was mostly portraits, but her commercial work is mostly etchings of Oxford, Cambridge and public schools at which she was very skilled. She signed her work as ‘M Oliver Rae’ to hide the fact that she was a woman which was thought to impair her ability to sell views of Oxford and Cambridge.
The rich tones of the etchings make them as popular today as when they were first made.

Mabel Oliver Rae was born in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, and trained at the Slade School of Fine Art between 1888 and 1890. Rae is known for her skilled etchings of various rural scenes and townscapes, particularly those of the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge. She signed works with the pseudonym 'M.Oliver Rae', a ruse to conceal the fact she was a female artist, so as not to reduce her chances with commercial dealers and agents.

Printed and published by the artist. In very good condition with minor age tone and scattered light surface soiling on the verso. Framed handsomely in an original Kulicke welded aluminum frame with the embossed maker's mark. [Milton 61].
Milton revisited this image in 1974 during an experiment to explore collage and the process of contact printing a high resolution photo-transparency directly onto a copper plate. He printed a small detail transparency of Mornings with Judd onto the existing plate, alongside it's larger self, and broke through to a new photo-resist approach, which Milton described as "piquant and irresistible," in his essays appearing in Robert Flynn...
