About the Item

This exquisite lithograph by Marcel Gromaire (1892–1971), titled Femme nu (Nude Woman), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. VII, No. 27–28, originates from the 1953 issue published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1953. This elegant and introspective composition exemplifies Gromaire’s mastery of form, structure, and expression, portraying the female figure with both sculptural solidity and emotional depth. Femme nu reflects the artist’s humanistic approach to the nude, combining modern abstraction with a timeless sense of dignity and restraint. Through his rhythmic contours, muted palette, and careful balance of geometry and softness, Gromaire creates an image that is both powerful and serene, revealing the harmony of strength and grace that defines his mature style. Executed as a lithograph on velin du Marais paper, this work measures 14 x 10.5 inches (35.56 x 26.67 cm). Signed in the plate and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Mourlot Freres atelier, renowned for its collaborations with the leading modern artists of the 20th century. Conceived as a synthesis of art and literature, Verve brought together the greatest modern artists and writers of its time—Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Fernand Leger, and others—alongside poets and philosophers such as Paul Eluard, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Each issue was designed as a complete work of art, featuring original lithographs printed by the master atelier Mourlot Freres and produced with an uncompromising devotion to quality and design. The 1953 double issue, Vol. VII, No. 27–28, stands among the publication’s most celebrated editions, reflecting the postwar vitality of the Parisian avant-garde and Verve’s enduring role as a bridge between art and literature. About the Artist: Marcel Gromaire (1892–1971) was a French painter, printmaker, and tapestry designer whose monumental compositions, sculptural forms, and deeply humanistic vision established him as one of the most powerful and enduring figures of 20th-century French modernism. Born in Noyelles-sur-Sambre, France, Gromaire was largely self-taught and initially trained in law before dedicating himself fully to art. Influenced by Paul Cezanne’s structural logic, the geometry of Cubism, and the expressive depth of early modern painting, he developed a distinctive style that balanced intellectual design with emotional resonance. His experiences as a soldier during World War I profoundly shaped his worldview, inspiring a focus on the strength, dignity, and perseverance of humanity. By the 1920s and 1930s, Gromaire had emerged as a leading figure in the Parisian avant-garde, exhibiting alongside Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Fernand Leger, and forming creative relationships with Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. His paintings—characterized by rhythmic structure, muted tones, and simplified geometric forms—depict workers, musicians, and nudes with sculptural solidity and quiet introspection, uniting modern design with timeless humanism. A pioneer of the integration of art and craft, Gromaire also designed celebrated tapestries in collaboration with the Manufacture des Gobelins and Aubusson, translating his monumental imagery into architectural scale. His influence extended to later generations of artists such as Jean Dubuffet, Balthus, and the postwar School of Paris, who admired his synthesis of geometry, empathy, and formal discipline. Today, Gromaire’s works are held in the world’s foremost collections, including the Centre Pompidou, the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Tate, and MoMA. Collectors continue to prize his art for its harmonious blend of strength and sensitivity, reflecting both the structural innovation of modernism and the enduring vitality of the human spirit. His highest auction record was achieved by Le Peintre et son modele (1939), which sold for €847,500 (approximately $1 million) at Christie’s, Paris, on December 4, 2013, affirming his lasting legacy as one of the great humanist painters of 20th-century France.
