Mary Teichman
Silent Snow (Poetical imagery and Christmas memories in New England)

1994

About the Item

This image is from an exclusive edition published by Stone + Press in 1994 in an edition of 100. This impression is #98. It brings to mind the Robert Frost poem, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep. Mary Teichman studied calligraphy with Donald Kunz at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York City, where she received her BFA in 1976. Examples of her calligraphy have been included in the books, The Art and Craft of Hand Lettering, by Annie Cicale (Lark Books) and Artful Cards by Katherine Duncan-Aimone (Lark Books). Aside from her calligraphy work, Mary is a printmaker, illustrator and painter. Her etchings are in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, The Boston Athenaeum, the Museum of the City of New York and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, among others. Mary has also illustrated several children’s books including Color by Christina Rossetti and Stars for Sarah by Ann Turner, both published by Harper Collins. She is a member of Masscribes, The Society of American Graphic Artists and The Boston Printmakers.

  • Lotus
    By Maki Hino
    Located in New Orleans, LA
Hino creates a still life of a lotus from an edition of 65. A prominent figure in Buddhist and Egyptian culture, and native flower for both India and Vietnam, the lotus holds enormous symbolic weight. It spans various thousand-year-old Eastern cultures and yet, is still considered one of the most sacred flowers today. So what is it about this mysterious blossom that people find so enrapturing? Its colorful bloom is an obvious suspect, but the lotus also has a life cycle unlike any other. With its roots based in mud, it submerges every night into murky river water, and—undeterred by its dirty environment—it miraculously re-blooms the next morning without residue on its petals. Although cultures have their own interpretations of this daily process, there is a general consensus among ancient texts...
