Max Beckmann was born on February 12, 1884, in Leipzig. From 1900, he studied at the Grand Ducal Art School in Weimar. Beckmann's artistic beginnings were influenced by the plein air painting taught there. In 1903, he went to Paris and attended the private Académie Colarossi. In Paris, he was particularly impressed by the paintings of Paul Cézanne. In 1904, Max Beckmann moved to Berlin, where he was influenced by German Impressionism and its representatives Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, and Max Slevogt. In 1906, he exhibited his works at the Berlin Secession exhibition in Weimar. He received the honorary prize of the German Artists' Association, which included a scholarship for a stay at the Villa Romana in Florence. In 1914, Max Beckmann co-founded the Free Secession in Berlin.
During World War I, Beckmann enlisted as a medic, but the horrific experiences of war led to a mental breakdown and he was discharged from military service.
Around 1916, Max Beckmann's painting style changed from Impressionism to Expressionism. Beckmann's characteristic style became densely packed, dynamic compositions of figures, which he exaggerated with sharp edges and pointed features. The content of his work became increasingly complex and esoteric, and is difficult to understand without knowledge of the sources used by Max Beckmann (Kabbalah, Gnosticism).
His artistic breakthrough came in the 1920s, with numerous exhibitions in Berlin, Dresden, Paris, and New York bringing Beckmann's work to public attention. The publisher Reinhard Piper published books illustrated by Max Beckmann as well as the major Beckmann monograph that appeared in 1924.
In 1925, Beckmann taught a master class at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, and in 1929 he became a professor. In 1928, the Kunsthalle Mannheim hosted a major retrospective compiled by Gustav F. Hartlaub. Beckmann received the Reich Prize for German Art, and the city of Düsseldorf awarded him its Gold Medal.
Max Beckmann's career was abruptly cut short when the Nazis seized power. In 1933, Beckmann was dismissed from the Städelschule, the Beckmann Hall in the Kronprinzenpalais of the National Gallery was cleared out, and a planned exhibition in Erfurt was canceled. Twelve of his paintings are shown in the 1937 exhibition "Degenerate Art" in Munich. One day after the opening of this exhibition, Beckmann emigrates to Amsterdam.
After 1945, Max Beckmann does not return to Germany, rejecting appointments at the Academy in Munich, the Berlin University of the Arts, and the Werkkunstschule in Darmstadt. In 1947, he accepted a professorship at the Washington University Art School in St. Louis. In 1949, he taught at the Art School of the Brooklyn Museum.
Max Beckmann died of heart failure in New York on December 27, 1950.

Max Beckmann
Max Beckmann was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century - both as a painter and as an outstanding graphic artist. Printmaking was the main medium he worked in between 1914 and 1924, creating a total of 156 drypoints, 72 lithographs and 16 woodcuts. From wikipedia: Max Carl Friedrich Beckmann (February 12, 1884 – December 27, 1950) was a German painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, and writer. Although he is classified as an Expressionist artist, he rejected both the term and the movement.[1] In the 1920s, he was associated with the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), an outgrowth of Expressionism that opposed its introverted emotionalism. Even when dealing with light subject matter like circus performers, Beckmann often had an undercurrent of moodiness or unease in his works. By the 1930s, his work became more explicit in its horrifying imagery and distorted forms with combination of brutal realism and social criticism, coinciding with the rise of nazism in Germany.
