Signed lower right, 'Max Pollak' (American, 1886-1970) with number and limitation, lower center, '54/150' and titled, lower left, 'New York: Hoboken Ferry'. Stamped in plate, lower right, with copyright for 'Corp. Rud. Lesch N.Y.'
Paper dimensions: 13.75 x 18.75 inches
Max Pollak was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia and, while still a young man in Vienna, had achieved a reputation for the skill of his etchings. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Art and, from 1910-1914, traveled through Italy, France and Holland. In 1927, he emigrated to New York and, by 1938, was living in California.
Over the course of a long career, Max Pollak exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards, including at the Golden Gate International Exposition (1939) and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor (1940). Among many distinctions, he won the California Society of Etchers awards (1942, 1944, 1945) and the Chicago Society of Etchers Award (1942).
