Nelson Mandela
The Lighthouse - Mandela, Former South African President, Signed, Robben Island

2002

About the Item

Nelson Mandela, The Lighthouse, Signed Limited Edition Lithograph Many people are unaware that Nelson Mandela turned his hand to art in his 80's as a way of leaving a legacy for his family. He spent time with an art tutor and learnt to draw. In 2002, when creating the The Lighthouse print, he told Anna and Laura from Belgravia Gallery of his desire to become a full time artist when he retired. This sketch depicts the view of the lighthouse on Robben Island. `The Lighthouse’ is a warning beacon to ward off passing ships from the treacherous shores of the island, which has a long history of shipwrecks. To Nelson Mandela the lighthouse on Robben Island resembles a contradiction as both a beacon of hope and a beacon of oppression. Nelson Mandela uses the expanse of the sky behind the lighthouse to emphasise the solitary nature of this structure silhouetted simply and quietly. An edition of 500 lithographs was launched on Robben Island in 2003 and very few remain available.

Color lithograph, Edition 30. The artist describes this project: “In this work I defang the stereotypes of Native Americans depicted as primitive savages in the painting by Wimar. The mask and the Mayan head team up with a third character to form a fictitious, original, trans-continental Border Patrol. This work is a humorous reminder that all nations in the Americas were created by undocumented immigrants from Europe. Today, some politicians call refugees from Central America and other countries “illegal aliens” but for me they are no different from the Pilgrims or Daniel Boone...
