About the Publication: The folio Les Peintres mes amis (The Painters My Friends), published in Paris in 1965 by Editions d'art Les Heures Claires, stands among the most ambitious postwar French printmaking collaborations. Conceived as a celebration of modern art’s greatest masters, the volume unites original graphic works by Dufy, Vlaminck, Matisse, Picasso, Chagall, Braque, Villon, Derain, Zadkine, Miro, and others, alongside critical essays by Andre Warnod. Each plate was executed under the supervision of Paris’s foremost ateliers—Mourlot Freres, Lucien Detruit, P.-J. Ballon, Manuel Robbe, and Raymond Jacquet—representing the finest techniques of lithography, etching, and woodcut. This luxurious folio exemplifies the artistry and craftsmanship of mid-20th-century French printing, merging text, image, and handcraft into a unified artistic statement. A triumph of the livre d’artiste tradition, it remains a vital record of the enduring creative dialogue between the painters, printers, and publishers who defined the visual culture of their time. About the Artist: Raoul Dufy (1877–1953) was a French painter, draftsman, printmaker, and designer whose radiant color, lyrical brushwork, and joyous depictions of modern life made him one of the defining figures of 20th-century modernism. Born in Le Havre, France, and trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Dufy began his career influenced by the Impressionists, particularly Claude Monet, before discovering the revolutionary power of Fauvism through Henri Matisse and Andre Derain in 1905. This encounter transformed his approach to painting, inspiring his liberation of color and rhythm, and his creation of an unmistakable visual language that celebrated light, movement, and joie de vivre. Deeply inspired by Eugene Delacroix’s color theories, Paul Cezanne’s structural rigor, and Vincent van Gogh’s expressive emotion, Dufy synthesized precision and spontaneity to produce paintings that shimmered with optimism and life. His iconic subjects—regattas at Deauville, horse races at Longchamp, orchestras, and seaside promenades—embodied the elegance, vitality, and cultural sophistication of modern France. Beyond painting, Dufy was a visionary designer, collaborating with the couturier Paul Poiret and the Bianchini-Ferier textile house to revolutionize early 20th-century fashion through his vivid, Fauvist-inspired patterns. A polymath in spirit, he also designed ceramics, book illustrations, stage sets, and large-scale murals, including his monumental masterpiece La Fee Electricite (The Electricity Fairy), completed in 1937 for the Paris Exposition Internationale—a sweeping celebration of scientific progress and human creativity that remains one of the great public artworks of the century. A contemporary of Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Salvador Dali, Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, and Man Ray, Dufy shared their modernist experimentation but distinguished himself through his lyrical optimism, transforming color and line into a visual symphony of light and rhythm. His influence extended far beyond his time, inspiring artists such as Marc Chagall, David Hockney, and Richard Diebenkorn, as well as designers who embraced his synthesis of art, beauty, and everyday life. His works, housed in major institutions including the Centre Pompidou, the Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris, Tate Modern, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, continue to captivate collectors for their harmony and exuberance. Standing alongside Picasso, Calder, Giacometti, Dali, Miro, Kandinsky, Duchamp, and Man Ray, Raoul Dufy remains one of the most beloved colorists in art history—a painter whose work distilled the beauty, elegance, and optimism of modern life. The highest auction record for Raoul Dufy was achieved by La Fee Electricite (circa 1937), which sold for $6,790,000 USD at Christie’s, New York, on May 8, 2019, confirming his enduring legacy as one of the most important and collectible masters of 20th-century art.
