About the Item
"Late Light" by Robert Burkert is a lithograph landscape by the master printmaker that depicts a clearing with autumn/winter trees in the subtle but vibrant colors of the sun's last light at dusk. The work is very keeping in his interests in seasonal landscapes of Wisconsin. The work is pencil numbered 35 from an edition of 80 and is pencil signed by the artist in the lower right corner, with an "impressit" (IMP), indicating that the artist printed this work himself.
Wisconsin artist and print-maker Robert Burkert was born in 1930 in Racine, Wisconsin. His artistic education began with scholarship classes at the Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts in Racine where he was taught by Sylvester and Cherry B. Jerry, the former having been the first director of the Wustum Museum. His initial career involved cartooning for the Chicago Tribune and ghost drawing for Western Publishing. He graduated with a BS in drawing, painting, and printmaking from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1952 and followed up with his MS degree in 1955. In 1953 he married Nancy Ekholm and began to teach at the Denison University in Granville, Ohio in 1955 before moving back to Wisconsin to head the printmaking department at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1956, where he remained until his retirement in 1993.
He exhibited at the Bradley Galleries, F.F.A. Galleries, and BergstromArt Center in 1971 and with a retrospective on his career at the UWM Fine Arts Gallery in 1994 after his retirement. His works can be found in the the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum and Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Tate Gallery, London, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Denver Art Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. - Joyce T. Nagel Lithograph "Snowscape" Artist's Proof Winter Scene Signed DatedLocated in Detroit, MI"Snowscape" is a study in contrasts being both a landscape and an abstract study of black and white negative/positive shapes. It is very powerful in the stark scene created and because of the interesting placement of the black and white areas. Being an "Artist's Proof" means that it was the first print pulled before the artist approved the look of the print and initiated further printing. It is an accomplished piece of depth and intellectual complexity. It is a Lithograph. Lithography is a planographic printmaking process in which a design is drawn onto a flat stone (or prepared metal plate, usually zinc or aluminum) and affixed by means of a chemical reaction. Like an actual storm whose characteristics are unique this monoprint is a one-off print and unique. She has captured the heavy dark feel of storm clouds and the slashing rain that accompanies a storm. Nagel has the ability to infuse her work with the intricate characteristics found in nature.
