Captain Robert Melville Grindlay (1786 - 1877)
Captain Grindlay was a British soldier who served as an agent of the East India Company from 1803-20 and who quickly rose through the ranks. During his time in India he travelled extensively particularly when detailed with his regiment. An amateur artist, throughout his time in India he continually sketched and painted. One of his most notable works was an opulent volume of sketches and drawings concentrated on the Indian Sub-continent. Scenery, Costumes and Architecture chiefly on the Western Side of India has become one of the most sought after colour-plate travel books due to its exquisite images which were made by the best artists and engravers of the time. The book includes breathtaking landscape and architecture of the cities of Bombay, Hyderabad and Gujarat; the mountains and ancient caves of Western Ghats; temples, fortresses, tombs and cultural practices all meticulously presented in elaborate colouring of deep contrasts, golden hues, soft mist and atmospheric effects with application of the aquatint technique.
Halvad was the former capital of Dhrangadhara state in Gujarat and was ruled by the Jhala Rajputs. It is an ancient fortified town at the southern edge of the little Rann of Kutch. Halvad has four step-wells and six temples devoted to the Hindu god Shiva. The Bhavani temple and the Bhuteshwar Mahadev temple at the cremation ground are thought to be at least 500 years old. According to Grindlay, in the foreground is a step-well. He commented: "These subterranean reservoirs present, throughout Guzerat, are some of the most splendid specimens of architecture, combining utility with unbounded richness of sculpture, and containing, in many instances, chambers and galleries for retreat during the oppressive heat of midday.”
