About the Item

Roger Muhl (1929-2008) Provence #7, 1986. Signed and numbered in pencil by the artist, lower margins. Artwork is in excellent condition with no damage or conservation. Provenance: Findlay Galleries, New York, NY One of Mühl's major sources of creativity throughout his career was light. It was in the south of France that he found the intense, bright sunlight that inspired him most. In this series of original signed lithographs from 1986, the artist depicts the landscapes around his home in Provence. These works were created to accompany texts and poems written by French author Marcel Pagnol. Roger Mühl was a 20th-century French painter best known for his light-drenched landscape renderings of the South of France. Mühl’s paintings often feature built-up impasto surfaces and utilize complimentary colors and neutral tones, creating both atmosphere and physicality in his subtle compositions. Born on December 20, 1929 in Strausbourg, France, he went on to attend the National School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg. He spent most of his life living and working in Provence while exhibiting in London, Paris, Geneva, Tokyo, and New York. Mühl died on April 4, 2008 in Mougins, France.

Jankowski was born in South Bend, Indiana. After serving in the US Navy Jankowski attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, where studied with Victor DeWilde, Otis Oldfield, and George Post. Returning to the mid-west he taught at Indiana University, South Western Michigan College, Hilton Leech School of Art, the Bremen Art Center, the Niles Art Center, the South Bend Art Association, and the Rockport Art Association. Beginning in 1964 he summered in Rocky Neck, MA, and opened a summertime gallery. In the 1970s he made a permanent move to Gloucester where he held workshops at his studio. In the 1990s he moved to Lanesville. Among those institutions with work by Jankowski is the Cape Ann Museum.
