About the Item

Sidney Chafetz (1922-2013) is an outstanding American printmaker whose career stretched from the 1940s through the twentieth century. A Rhode Island native, Sidney Chafetz attended the Rhode Island School of Design. His education was interrupted by WWII. Chafetz was drafted into the US Army and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He graduated from RISD in 1947 and in 1948 began teaching at Ohio State University where he established the printmaking program. He retired in 1982 as professor emeritus. Over the years he received Fulbright, Ford Foundation, and Tiffany grants. His early intaglios reflect his experience at Stanley William Hayter's Atelier 17 intaglio workshop. By 1951 his work showed his interest in politics about which he was passionate. He was a major force to his students and colleagues. This piece, Paris Landscape, 1947, is a very early engraving of 1947, (Chafetz 5), upon which the artist has drawn in pencil. It's possible that there were five impressions of the engraving but this work is certainly unique. It is signed and dated twice, and it is titled, all in pencil.
