1930. Etching. Beetles 17. 6 x 5 1/4 (sheet 11 1/2 x 9). Edition 30, #29, published by the Twenty-One Gallery. Exhibited at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, 1932(?); Fine Art Society, February 1933, #38, £3.13.6. A rich, tonal impression printed on cream laid paper. Signed, titled, and numbered in pencil. Housed in a 20 x 16-inch archival mat. The etching presents a view near Riverhead and Pole Hill. Stanley Roy Badmin was born in Sydenham, London on 18 April 1906. He studied at Camberwell School of Art (1922-24) and the Royal College of Art (1924-27) and began his career by contributing illustrations to The Graphic (1927) and The Tatler (1928). In 1928, he qualified as a teacher and supplemented his income by teaching at Richmond School of Art (1934) and St John’s Wood School of Art (1936). However, he worked increasingly as an etcher and watercolorist and was soon elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (ARE 1931, RE 1935) and the Royal Society of Painters in Water-Colours (ARWS 1932, RWS 1939). His etchings are represented in numerous public collections, including the British Museum; the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford); Aberystwyth University School of Art; and the Herbert F Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University (NY).

Alington in Wiltshire (The First Swallow). 1927. Etching. Garton 2.iv. 6 3/4 x 8 7/8 (sheet 10 1/2 x 13 1/2). Final state published by in an editon of 12 by Garton & Cooke in 1982 (Nicolson published an edition of 40 in 1927). In states iii and iv, the swallow of the title was removed. In state iv, the sky was re-etched and the cross-hatching was slightly finer. Signed in pencil. Garton writes, page 11: "The design was based on the Anglican chapel-of-ease is the farmyard of Bulisge at Allinston near Chippenham....The print was originally entitled The First Swallow, but the swallow was burnished out before the 1927 edition....Fifty years later new work was effected in the worn-out areas of the sky and distance to produce prints which, in his opinion, were better than those of the original edition." Robin Tanner was an English artist, etcher, and printmaker. He followed the visionary tradition of Samuel Palmer and English neo-romanticism. A fine impression printed on cream wove paper with full margins. Toning in the image, otherwise good condition. Signed in pencil. Housed in a 22 x 28-inch archival mat, suitable for framing. Born in 1818, Sir Francis Seymour Haden was an etcher, collector and surgeon. He studied at the Derby School, Christ’s Hospital and University College in London. He also studied at the medical schools of the Sorbonne in Paris and at Grenoble. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1842 and he was made a fellow in 1857. He was an honorary surgeon to the Department of Science and Art from 1851 to 1867 and in 1847 he settled into a private practice. Haden was a vice-president of the obstetrical society of London and one of the founders of the Royal Hospital for Incurables in 1850. He was the first President of the Royal Society of Painter-Echers. In 1858, Haden encouraged James McNeil Whistler to work from nature and consequently, Whistler dedicated his first set of etchings entitled “French Set”, to Haden. The etchings were printed by Auguste Delâtre in Paris and marketed, with some help from Haden, in London. In 1859 Whistler settled in London and often visited Haden’s Sloane Street home.
