Original Civil War lithograph depicting "Camp Leavitt", the winter quarters of the 16th Maine Regiment, date March 18, 1865. Artist: Wesley Weber. Lithographer: J.H. Bufford. Shows Brigade Headquarters, Headquarters of the Regiment, Line Officers, Sutler, Camp of the 88th Pennsylvania Volunteers, Commissary and the Headquarters of the 39th Massachusetts Volunteers. Foreground shows field officers including Col. Charles W. Tilden, who enlisted in May 1861 as First ieutenant in Company B of the 2nd Maine Volunteers. He was soon promoted to Captain. He was discharged in June 1862, promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. He then was commissioned into the 16th Maine Infantry and promoted to Colonel in July 1863. He led the 16th Maine in combat, including important Civil War battles, such as Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, and Appomattox.
