About the Item
SNCF Normandie is a 1952 French travel advertisement by artist Raoul Dufy for the French Railway. The French Railway is commonly known as SNCF, Societe Nationale de Chemin de Fer. Throughout the years, they have commissioned prominent artists to depict well known destinations in France to encourage train travel by the French public and visitors.
This poster features the northern province of Normandie, which is located only 2 hours from Paris. Its accessibility via the railroad to Paris allowed for the region to become known as a weekend getaway for Parisians.
Tsuguharu (Leonard) Foujita (1886-1968) was a Japanese-born painter who spent most of his life and career in France. Applying his traditional ink techniques to Western-style paintings made a name for the artist in the Roaring Twenties art scene in Paris. He was close contemporaries and friends with Man Ray, Modigliani, Picasso, and other important artists of Montparnasse. This poster was created towards the end of Foujita's career, a few years after he became a French citizen.
This is an Original Vintage Poster. It is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Léonard Tsugouharu Foujita
Léonard Tsugouharu Foujita was a painter and printmaker, born in 1886 in Edogawa, Tokyo. He received his formal training at the Imperial School of Fine Arts, quickly attracting success with commissions from the emperors of Korea and Japan. In 1913, he traveled to Paris, immediately befriending many of the leading painters of the day, including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Henri Matisse, Henri Rousseau, and Chaim Soutine. He struck up a particularly close friendship with the famous Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. Known for his eccentric personality, Foujita developed a colorful reputation through his cropped hairstyle, hoop earrings, and glasses. But beyond his public image, Foujita took his work very seriously, displaying a fondness for white and pale shades like lavender and gray. Foujita walked a fine line between Japanese and European art and was repeatedly inspired by women and cats. Following the breakup of his third marriage, Foujita left Paris for Latin America, spending time in Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, and Argentina, before eventually returning to Japan, where he lived during World War II. Following the war, Foujita again left Japan for France, eventually becoming a citizen in 1955. Later in life, Foujita converted to Catholicism, and decorated a cathedral in the city of Reims. Foujita then adopted the Christian name Léonard, in homage to Leonardo da Vinci, and was buried in Reims following his death in 1968 at the age of 81. Today, his work can be found in numerous public collections including the Hiroshima Museum of Art, the National Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum of Western Art in Japan

Loterie Nationale Original Vintage French Poster by Derouet Lesacq c1939
Located in Boca Raton, FL
This is one of a series of posters created for the Loterie Nationale (National Lottery) in France by a team of artists known as Derouet-Lesacq. In these posters, the element of simplicity is emphasized, allowing the artists to apply detail to the array of environments that these posters are set in.
This Art Deco style poster is for a special Homemaking (Arts Menagers) lottery drawing. The man in the center of the image is shown lounging on a chair, presenting an unplugged chord, demonstrating comfort after his lottery win.
The French Government promoted a nationwide lottery for many years, and during the 1930’s they commissioned artist Edgar Derouet to create many of their posters. Derouet realized his posters either alone or with one of his many collaborators. This poster is the result of a collaboration with Charles Lesacq, who worked with Derouet from 1938 to 1940.
Edgar Derouet (1910-2001) is known for his simplistic, geometric and modern advertising posters for the French Lottery (Loterie Nationale). Derouet was selected by France to create a campaign for the Loterie Nationale because of his well-known reputation as a graphic artist. In his earlier days, Derouet studied with well-known poster artists Paul Colin and George Hamel, allowing him to further perfect his illustration technique. Derouet won an award for Best Poster of the Year in 1936 and was featured at the International Exposition in Paris, France in 1937.
Charles Lesacq (1909-1940) was a French artist best known for his French National Lottery poster...
