About the Item
Lucien Boucher 🇫🇷 (1889 - 1971), a multifaceted artist known for his prowess as a painter, engraver, poster designer, and draftsman, left an indelible imprint on his era through his remarkable works. His journey into the world of art began with ceramics, studying at the renowned Sèvres School. However, the tumultuous events of World War I redirected his path.
In 1914, Boucher was sent to the frontlines, where he experienced captivity as a prisoner of war. It was during this trying period that he discovered his innate talent for drawing. Initially recognized for his caricatures in the humorous weekly magazine he eventually ventured into designing posters and flyers, most notably for Air France.
One of Boucher's most captivating creations is his 1948 poster for Air France, titled "Air France - Orient - Extrême Orient." This masterpiece features a mythical Phoenix soaring gracefully ahead of a French aircraft. Below, a map of Asia is adorned with opulent palaces and minarets, while an Asian sailboat glides peacefully across the sea. The awe-inspiring backdrop includes the majestic snow-capped peak of Mount Everest, all set against a striking red background.
This poster, printed by Perceval Paris, is a testament to Boucher's ability to combine artistry with a sense of wonder and adventure. It captures the essence of Air France's allure, inviting travelers to embark on a journey to the enchanting Orient and the Far East.
Lucien Boucher's 1948 poster is not merely an advertisement; it's a masterpiece that encapsulates the magic of travel and exploration. His unique vision and artistic talents continue to inspire and serve as a testament to the enduring power of visual storytelling.
