About the Item

"CONGREGATION OF WITS, Box Set of 41 Prints", 2018, limited-edition collection of 40 double-sided silkscreen prints, plus one title print, by Andrew Cornell Robinson. There are 10 box sets in custom-made chocolate linen archival boxes with a gold stamped title. Each print is signed, stamped and editioned. The prints measure 17x17", the box 17.5x17.5". Note the double-sided printing – surfaces of text, surfaces of image. The installation (see photos above) is a striking performance in itself with myriad possibilities for color, pattern, language, culture, politics, identity. The artist is pleased to offer guidance on the installation, according to the collector's wishes. Or a collector may arrange personally. It's a dynamic body of work that delights in the craft of making and the experience of revealing a tapestry of image and language. Initially inspired by a visit to the Talking Sculptures of Rome, which for the past five hundred years Romans have written poems, prayers, and political protestations and pasted them on a group of ancient sculptures in the eternal city. Much like the public exchange of ideas that take place today upon social media platforms and street art, he has created a collection of silkscreen prints comprised of 1,000 drawings with corresponding text messages printed on the back of each image. Andrew Cornell Robinson is an interdisciplinary artist working across media (ceramics, textiles, painting, prints, etc.). His work is influenced by collaborative craft communities, traditions, and the performative qualities of cultural production. The underlying ideas exploring identity, histories, rituals, and power in his work aim to create a space for intimate experiences and open narratives. He studied ceramic sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art and the Maryland Institute College of Art where he received a BFA. He was awarded an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, where he became interested in the intersection of memory, identity, politics, and power. He has been featured in many publications including Sculpture Magazine, Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, Art Info, et al. He has participated in curatorial and research projects and recently was a participating artist in Debtfair a project in the Whitney Biennial. Andrew has also worked on collaborations with designers such as Donna Karan’s Urban Zen project where his work in ceramics led to workshops with artisans in Haiti and the creation of a ceramic studio in Port-au-Prince. He is currently working with The Powerhouse Arts Workshop and their design team from the Pritzker-prize winning architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron in the design and development of a contemporary industrial fabrication center established to serve the working needs of artists in New York City. He is currently a member of the faculty at Parsons School of Design and Greenwich House Pottery in New York City. His work has been presented extensively throughout the world with the Anna Kustera Gallery, David & Schweitzer Contemporary, Christopher Stout Gallery, Joyce Goldstein Gallery, Baltimore Contemporary Museum of Art (Maryland), Ross Art Museum (Ohio), the Crafts Council (United Kingdom), Saint Joseph’s University (Pennsylvania) and many more. Andrew lives and works in New York City.

"Pile Series" was completed during the 1970s. It has a tongue-in-cheek affect as all the prints are photographs of stacks, or "piles", of industrial construction items silkscreened on cardboard giving these building materials a more aesthetic value. These silkscreens are mentioned and one is pictured in the famous, "Kick Out the Jams: Detroit Cass Corridor 1963 - 1977" iconic publication by the Detroit Institute of Arts regarding Detroit's Cass Corridor Artists. They are all signed and numbered. James Alan Crawford was born in 1944 in Hillsdale, Michigan. He studied art for two years at Michigan State University before transferring to Wayne State University and graduating there. He received his MFA in 1969 while being mentored by John Egner and Aris Koutroulis...
