About the Item

This charming and colorful lithographic poster, created in 1896 by Lucien Lefèvre, is part of the iconic Les Maîtres de l’Affiche (Masters of the Poster) series, published by Jules Chéret. It promotes the product Cacao Lacté de Ch. Gravier, a sweetened milk chocolate powder that was positioned as superior to all other known chocolates and cocoas of the time. In this scene, a young child dressed in a dark smock and straw hat holds a bowl of hot cocoa while being joyfully approached by a white dog standing upright, begging for a taste. The rich red and golden hues surrounding them evoke warmth, appetite, and youthful delight. The composition is not only eye-catching, but also deeply nostalgic—evoking a sense of innocence, trust, and domestic happiness that brands like Gravier’s aimed to associate with their products. The bold yellow and black title “CACAO LACTÉ” crowns the poster, while a vibrant red background sets the emotional tone. The confident slogan “Supérieur à tous les chocolats et cacaos connus” (Superior to all known chocolates and cocoas) reinforces the marketing appeal, accompanied by the very specific pricing of 6 francs per kilo—a detail reflecting the consumer-oriented design typical of fin-de-siècle advertising. Lucien Lefèvre was a talented illustrator and lithographer known for his engaging commercial posters during the Belle Époque. While less widely known than Jules Chéret or Alphonse Mucha, Lefèvre contributed notable works to the visual culture of the era, many of which were included in the celebrated Maîtres de l’Affiche collection. This particular piece (Plate 11) is one of the earlier entries in the series and a delightful example of how advertising could be both artful and persuasive. Today, this original lithograph is treasured not only for its historic and artistic value but also for its joyful character. It is a perfect representation of late 19th-century French graphic art—where everyday products were transformed into poetic moments of life through illustration. F. Bouisset, Original Art Nouveau Poster, Chocolat Poulain, Cocoa, Pierrot, 1898
By Firmin Bouisset
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
Original Cocoa Poster by Firmin Bouisset for Chocolat Poulain in 1898. Artist: Firmin Bouisset (1859-1925) Title: Chocolat Poulain Date: vers 1898 Size: 36.6 x 50.8 in / 93 x 129 cm. Printer: Imp. H.LAAS E. PECAUD & Cie, Paris Materials and Techniques: Colour lithograph on paper Linen backing: Yes Condition: A (Designates a poster in very good condition. The colours are fresh and there are no or very few paper losses. If there are imperfections they are marginal and imperceptible.) Additional Details: Advertising poster for Poulain Chocolates produced by Firmin Bouisset circa 1898. Chocolat Poulain is a French company producing chocolate since its foundation in February 1848 by Victor-Auguste Poulain, confectioner in Blois. The horse/foal is the emblem of the company. Firmin Bouisset chose here to represent the brand by a Pierrot holding a chocolate bar in his hand. Pierrot's traditional tears have been replaced with chocolate smeared all over his face. The Pierrot is known for his naivety but also and above all for being trustworthy, and that's probably what Bouisset wanted to highlight here: you can eat Chocolat Poulain with your eyes closed. Firmin Bouisset, born September 2, 1859 in Moissac and died March 19, 1925 in Paris, is a French illustrator, lithographer and poster artist. He was received at the School of Fine Arts in March 1880 in the class of Alexandre Cabanel, and exhibited two paintings the same year at the Salon. He became known especially for his advertising posters, including the small schoolboy LU biscuits, paper cigarette JOB, and the girl's chocolate Menier...
