Aquatint Etching
Susan Hall lives and works in Point Reyes Station, California, a town in the heart of the Point Reyes National Seashore. This pristine wilderness area is dominated by a mosaic of bays and ocean, rolling grass lands and forests. It is inhabited by a diversity of wildlife, including over 450 species of birds, mountains lions, deer, bobcats, foxes, and elk. Ms. Hall who is a native of this area returned after spending twenty years in New York City.
In her book, “Painting Point Reyes”, Hall says, “Point Reyes is the center of my painting life. Point Reyes has been my life and when I haven’t lived here, it has been an underground stream that spoke to me in dreams and visions.”
While living and painting in New York City, Ms. Hall exhibited her work widely in museums and galleries. Among them are the Whitney Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Art; Nancy Hoffman Gallery, Trabia MacAfee Gallery, Phyllis Kind Gallery, Chicago; Ovsey Gallery, Los Angeles.
In addition, her work has been featured in group exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad, including in 2020 Bud Shark's Ink: The California Crew at BMoCA, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art Colorado USA representing the panoply of aesthetics, cultural backgrounds, viewpoints, and talent held within the bounty of art “made in California.” This remarkable grouping of artists, Brad Brown, Enrique Chagoya, Roy De Forest, Amy Ellingson, Susan Hall, Don Ed Hardy, Mildred Howard, Robert Hudson, Hung Liu, Kara Maria, Rex Ray, Alison Saar, Italo Scanga, and William T. Wiley.

Animals have always been at the heart of my work. I find the form, movement and behaviour of the creatures I draw a source of limitless fascination. I love the idea of them watching me, watching them as I draw. I hope my appreciation of the sentience and character of the animals I draw comes across in my work. Over my career I have drawn everything from primates to penguins, dogs, ostriches and even an echidna. These days dogs are my main focus, mostly because I adore dogs but also because they are such an integral part of life. I am delighted by the theory that humans and dogs co evolved, we wouldn’t be what we are without them and vice versa. I try to pare my images down to a balanced simplicity that directs attention to the subject of the picture. I try to balance the subject and the space it occupies, giving each equal importance. Light is hugely important to my work, I imagine my subject in three dimensions as I draw and the light describes the musculature and texture that gives the drawing it’s presence and grounds it in the picture. I aim to capture a pause, a moment where whatever I draw looks like it could wander off or leap up any minute. My influences include Japanese prints, Chinese and Japanese brush drawing and the European artists who were influenced by Japan. Landscape is a beautiful black and white etching on paper, realized around the 80s by the Italian artist Fiorella Diamantini (Cingoli, 1931-2019). Signed in pencil on the lower right margin and with the abbreviation "P.d.a." in pencil on the lower left margin.
Our original etching, an artist proof, confirms the artist's love for classic style in the wake of another great artist from the region Marche: Luigi Bartolini.
The hills and the trees clearly emerge among the often rampant whites, but on closer inspection there is no sign that the view is not built, everything is defined by a fabric of lines that thickens for the contours, and it is made rarer for the shadows. She seems to draw her landscapes from absolute white, where the edges of the real irrepressible by a single line are defined by the hatching. A real skilled hand demonstrates a full mastery of the artistic technique and a real suggestive hatching that has something of the geometrical rigor.
In very good conditions, except for a minor stain on the lower left margin and some imperceptible signs of time.
Fiorella Diamantini was born in Cingoli in 1931 and graduated from the Book School of Urbino and the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. She studied engraving with Leonardo Castellani in Urbino and Mino Maccari in Rome. Since 1958, she has taught in Rome Techniques of Engraving, first assistant of Mino Maccari, then of Arnoldo Ciarrocchi.
From 1951, she lived in Rome. In 1980, she moved to Umbria, in Spello. She has been invited to the most important engraving reviews: the Venice Biennale (1956), the Venice Black and White Biennial, the Rome Quadrennial and the national and international exhibitions organized at the National Chalcography of Rome. His works have been presented at the Michel Gallery in Paris, at the Stockholm National Museum, at the National Chalcography of Rome, at the International Rossetti Library in Rome, at the Prandi Library in Reggio Emilia. Her works are present at the InClub Publishing House in Florence and the Galaverni Saletta in Reggio Emilia. Gallery curates a series of original etchings from respected European artist Cuca Romley. Ms Romley is in her late 80's and currently based in Spain. She was trained at The École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA), a distinguished National School of Fine Arts in Paris, France.
The artist won several noted awards for her art in her native Spain, and in Paris, France. She worked as an artist and also had a career in advertising, illustration and interior design, in Spain, France and New York. As an artist, she has had solo and group exhibitions first Paris, France, Monaco, Japan, Spain and the US.
ETCHINGS
Cuca Romley’s etchings of both famous and little places around the world are depicted with a remarkable attention to detail, a style that belies her sophisticated sense of line and color. These etchings capture a bygone era of a city in flux, and a snap shot of a classic image of a place. Each plate is etched with patience and a thoroughness reminiscence of the earlier days of engraving, in exquisite and fine detail.
Romley creates her intricate design on the etching ground that covers the copper plate. After the acid has etched the lines into the copper plate she engraves the details into the plate with a buril until the image is completed. For each individual print a master printer must ink the plate and wipe the surface clean. The plate is placed on the bed of the press and the previously wet French Arches paper 100% cotton covering the plate to pass through the press, and that completes the printing process.
After the printing ink has dried for a couple of days, the etching is ready for the hand coloring by the artist. There are often more than 30 colors in one of Romley’s images. Each print can take up to 6 hours to color; these colors impart a subtle transparent effect that compliments the delicacy of the line.
Every etching in the limited edition is then signed and numbered in pencil by the artist.

First invented in the 1500s, etching is a way of incising lines in a metal plate by first drawing on an acid-resistant coating, or ground, to reveal the metal beneath. The plate is then submerged in acid, which “bites” the lines into the metal plate. The ground is then removed and the plate inked for pressing. Etched lines tend to reveal the movement of the artist’s hand more than a technique like engraving, since the image is created on a softer ground.
“People often ask me what types of prints they should collect — etchings or woodcuts or linocuts or silkscreens or lithographs or whatever,” explains Ryan Cross, associate director of Boston’s Barbara Krakow Gallery. “But it’s really more how the artist used those processes and what he or she was trying to express through the medium.”
