About the Item

Artist: Michele van de Roer Medium: Hard Ground Etching on Rives Paper, Signed & Numbered 3/65, 2015 Dimensions: 27.25 x 22.25 in, 69.2 x 56.5 cm Born in Delft, Netherlands, Michele Van de Roer studied Fine Arts, Art History, French and English literature in the Netherlands and in France. She studied Visual Arts with Pierre Buraglio, Jacques Clerc and Pierre Soulages in France and had an extraordinary printmaking experience with brothers Jacques and Robert Lacourière at the Lacourière-Frélaut studios in Montmartre, printmaking home to artists like Picasso, Chagall, and Léger. A Fulbright Scholarship provided her with the means to study at Pratt Institute in a Master of Fine Arts Program. New York with its raucous disorder, its polyglot population, and its openness to all visions was a tremendous, deeply provocative intellectual experience of its own. Her attempt to visualize New York in a print resulted in an engraving entitled Eva’s Magic World that was jury selected for the «Architecture in the Contemporary Print» show. Her work was presented along side artists such as Rauschenberg and Christo in this exhibition of works at Pratt Manhattan Gallery. Apart from a new vision of art and of the world, the Fulbright program gave her early and meaningful professional recognition. In 2000 the Paris Rodin Museum commissioned and purchased a series of prints, which precipitated multiple private and public commissions. In 2015, her prints were selected by Sarah Suzuki, curator of Prints, Drawings and Illustrated Books at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMa), to be shown at The Manhattan Graphics Center Gallery. She also had a solo show curated by John Szoke of his eponymous gallery in New York at the Manhattan Graphics Center. Michèle van de Roer lives and works mostly in Paris where she is also represented by the Paul Prouté Gallery, and in New York.
