About the Item

Hardcover book in dust jacket signed by David Hockney and Stephen Spender From a limited edition of 1,100, numbered 'AP 73/100' Accompanied by a five-colour folding lithographic print on Somerset paper signed by David Hockney Housed in original publisher's box Book size: 19 ¼ x 21 ¼ inches Print size: 19 ½ x 21 ½ inches [folded] Published by Thames and Hudson, 1982 David Hockney (born 1937) visited China in the early 1980s, just as the country was beginning to open up to the West following decades of cultural and political isolation. This journey had a significant and lasting impact on Hockney's work. He was able to explore Eastern aesthetics, find a point of intersection, and incorporated them into his own practice. Hockney travelled with the poet and novelist Stephen Spender (1909 - 1995). The pair collaborated to create the book China Diary, both observing and recording their experiences of daily life and their meetings with contemporary Chinese artists. As well as the 158 illustrations, 84 in colour, of Hockney's drawings and watercolours, this book reproduces photographs and texts that offer a catalogue of Hockney's personal insights into a unique period in Chinese cultural practices. This limited first edition is accompanied by a large lithographic print Red Square and the Forbidden City, Hockney's illustration of one of China's most historically and politically charged monuments. This work reflects Hockney's engagement with Chinese drawing practices and traditional ways of seeing. While the Tiananmen Gate is rendered in a conventional face-on perspective, the Forbidden City beyond is perceived from overhead as if a blueprint or map. The vastness of the Red Square (also known as 'Tiananmen Square') is shown through minuscule figures on bicycles, allowing the white of the paper to signify an expanse of airy space. These competing visual languages are each explored in Hockney's characteristically bright use of colour and Red Square and the Forbidden City is a synthesis of his bold approach to draughtsmanship and his interest in Chinese artistry. This copy from the 1982 limited edition is numbered 'AP 73/100'. While there are some small areas of discolouration and fraying on the exterior of the box and the book's dust jacket has some creasing, it is overall in very good condition.
