About the Item
Original vintage maritime event advertising poster for the Navy Week Portsmouth 1-8 August featuring an illustration depicting the Royal Navy battleship HMS Nelson (launched 1925-decommissioned 1948) on the horizon with the Battle of Trafalgar flagship of the First Sea Lord HMS Victory (launched 1765) in the foreground, the title in colourful bold lettering on the black border below. The influential British naval commander Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) was killed on board HMS Victory during the 1805 battle against the Franco-Spanish fleet; still in commission the historic HMS Victory became a harbour ship in 1824 and a museum ship in Portsmouth dry dock in 1922. Published by Pool's Advertising Service. Horizontal. Good condition, paper losses on edges, restored tears, staining, creasing, backed on linen.
