1940s

About the Item

Original vintage cruise travel poster - Queen Mary Queen Elizabeth Fastest Ocean Service in the World Cunard White Star - featuring a colourful image of the two ocean liners at sea showing passengers enjoying their cruise on the decks of the Queen Elizabeth in the foreground, playing tennis and relaxing on board below the two funnels, the steam rising by the ship's flags with the Queen Mary sailing on the horizon. Artwork by Walter Thomas (1894-1971). The British shipping company Cunard White Star Line was founded in 1934 by Cunard (founded 1840) and White Star Line (1845-1934) providing passenger and shipping transportation services on the transatlantic route until 1949 when Cunard bought out White Star. Launched in 1934 the RMS Queen Mary took her maiden voyage in 1936 as Cunard's flagship liner; she was converted during World War Two into an allied troop ship and resumed transatlantic passenger services after the war before retiring in 1967; the Queen Mary is now permanently moored as a museum and hotel ship in California. Launched in 1938 the RMS Queen Elizabeth (known as Hull 552 during construction) was a luxury liner and sister ship to the RMS Queen Mary; she served as a troop ship during WWII and resumed services until her retirement in 1967; after her initial sale to Long Beach City in California she was sold on and eventually scrapped in 1973 after a fire in 1972 during renovation in Hong Kong. Good condition, creasing, staining, small tears on edges.
